Smile Re: Which is Better: Water Bottles or Water Bowls?

I think I may stick with water bowls for now, because she knows exactly how to use them (she had no troubles, I just picked her up and showed them to her). I can tell she's drinking because the water level has gone down.

Just in case I do get another water bottle, what water bottles are good?

Thank you!

I'm using the living world glass one. I have used the cheap plastic ones but found they drip more

I use the all living things glass bottle, is that the same thing? I found that the older it gets, the less water comes out.

They was I see it is there's 4 options for watering hamsters.

Essentially yes they're (the bottles) the same thing from what I've seen on the net. Obviously you could replace it that's be option one. I think I read somewhere about removing the one ball helping as the second helps create a tighter seal stopping it leaking? So potential option 2.
Option 3 is water bowl. If it works why not stick to it.
Option 4 for added water boost add in fruits like kiwi to help replenish water levels. (Not tried this one so not sure how effective it is).

Hamsters in the wild live on the edges of deserts and such where water isn't necessarily plentiful. Also they don't have bottles in the wild so they either drank out of a puddle or, more likely, ate things like fruits and bugs to get water.

If you’re concerned about him jumping in I suggest using a shallower dish, such as a sauce plate/bowl. Keep in mind these dry out quickly, though; definitely have to replace that at least twice a day. I also found that placing the bowl in a blocked off area (ex under a smallish hide) can prevent your hamster from jumping in at least accidentally.

To add to the thread: I’m not sure if I’ve just gotten crazy lucky or what but I’ve had a lot of success with the Kaytee glass bottles. I still have the one I used for my first hamster and it works great; it’s in my mouse bin atm. I also got another that, at first, wasn’t that great, but sometimes if you twist spout on top hard the water becomes leaky so I just learned to not go too hard on it.

The tea light holder is 5x5 cm and he full on purposely jumped in like a child excited to go into a pool.

I've taken it out and will be off tomorrow to find something more shallow. Does it matter if it's wide? Just trying to find something small and shallow is near impossible

If itís smaller it may discourage him from jumping in but Iíve had success with dishes as large as 10cm in diameter.

I donít think thereís something similar in the EU but I found my current sauce dish from Christmas Tree Shop. Itís basically just a tiny dish; Iíve never seen it anywhere else. Perhaps some more thrifty stores may have something?

If you canít find something like that, Iíd just make sure the room definitely doesnít have any chance of a chill so in case he hops in nothing much will come of it

I would discourage the use of anything larger than 5cm diameter for a hamster who has shown they will jump into the bowl. If you use a saucer, there is a high likelihood that he is going to constantly trek through the water, contaminate it, and drive you insane by constantly needing to change it throughout the day.

I use the rodipet bowls and have used them for all five species; they are 5cm diameter, about 3cm high - i have never had a hamster fall into them and if they do jump in, it wouldn't be a big deal for an adult, or even juvenile dwarf. He should realise that if he goes in, he'll get wet and should eventually stop the behaviour. Just don't fill the bowl to the brim until his brain makes the association that jumping into the bowl = hes gonna get wet. Place it in an area that is low traffic too; don't give him any reason to view trekking to the bowl as a shortcut to where he wants to go.

I have been an advocate for use of bowls for several years now; theyre cleaner, theyre more ntaural, and allow the animal to drink freely and at whatever pace they want vs water bottles which are more difficult to clean, overall more unnatural drinking position, and only release small droplets at a time. Ultimately choose what works best for your hamster; for mine, it has always been bowls. I place them on top of their multi chamber houses; never had any issues with them diving in them or kicking bedding into the water.

Engel, Would this be any good for you

I use mine for medicine for the hamsters. The internal bit would be 5 cm x 1.5 cm - external is 7cm

We have started using these now. We do sit them in a cat milk saucer but the hammies don't tend to knock them over.
