Default Bed/Nest Question...

Hey fellow hamster parents!

Looking for some advice here... So I brought my newly adopted Syrian hamster baby, Wintergreen, home from the shelter 10 days ago, where her rescued mum gave birth to her. Shes settled in well, but she's got some funny ideas about where to bed down, as per usual for a new Syrian... Just wondering if I could have some advice as to what might be the best way forward...

I've provided one of the large pets at home straw-roofed round huts for her, and filled it out with plenty of clean&cosy bedding (about 7in deep all told) to burrow into. From experience, this house makes for easy spot cleaning with minimal burrowing disturbance. She, however has decided to go behind it, in the corner, and has not burrowed at all like I guess I thought she should have...!! She's kinda huddled up between the diy tank corner, and this large hut she's meant supposed to be *inside* of. The awkward bit is I'm then going to massively disturb her nest if I clean it out, but being a baby and only just having learned to go potty the other side of the cage in her dedicated potty sand tub, her nest is in need of a tidy out. She seems to be trying to do so, but where it is isn't exactly helping cos she can't get stuff out of a burrow hole.

She's just beginning to trust me to stroke her and begin cupping her, and I don't want to totally freak or upset her by messing with her nest so early on. I feel like a shoebox might be a better option if she likes the idea of a corner, but it's weighing up the disturbance and stress factor... what do you guys think? Any bright ideas/suggestions/advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Typical hamster! Haha. They often do the very opposite of what we would like them to do.

I think a shoebox would be better because you could lift the roof off to check the nest and hoard. Make sure to cut the bottom out so she can sink her nest into the substrate.

Unless she pees in her nest i'd leave it alone and keep cleaning to a minimum so she can establish her own, homely scent.

Hehe yes they def have a mind of their own! I was thinking that an upturned bottomless shoebox would be a good option, yes - the only thing is that to remove the existing hut and change over to that is gonna disturb her nest quite a bit... thing is I can't get at the poos and dirty 'hammy laundry' she's tried to shovel out of her nest, so I'm thinking I'm going to have to go for it and just do my best to keep her nest as intact as possible, for the longer term gain of being able to spot clean easier.
