Default Syrian and Russian dwarf getting along?

Hello! I’m new to the forum here and was honestly just looking for some answers and opinions on my current situation!
My boyfriend and I currently have 2 hamsters, a male syrian called Honey and a male russian dwarf called Nugget. Currently, Honey is in a 30 gallon aquarium and Nugget is in a 20 gallon beside him. At some point early this morning we assume, after leaving for work, Nugget managed to push his wheel to an area of the tank that allowed him to climb up and over, landing in Honey’s cage. We had no idea until a few hours ago (about 10pm) when I looked over and saw Nugget walking out of Honey’s hide! We immediately put him back in his own tank and checked both hamsters over for bits or injury and found nothing. We carefully placed them on a desk together and they just went about their own business, passing each other, sniffing, and moving on.
We’ve separated them into their own tanks and made sure there’s no way Nugget could get out again.
My question here is, has this ever happened before? Is it impossible for them to get along permanently? I can’t find anyone on the internet who has ever run into a situation like this and we’re just not sure what has happened haha.
In the time it’s taken me to write this, Honey has began to move around the cage quickly as if looking for him.
Any advice or information is welcome! Thank you!!

Please try to stop this happening again. It's really not a good idea. Hamsters can turn in a split second and fight to the death. You may find it's been stressful having another ham in the tank with honey so he's trying to find the intruder and keep tabs on him.

May I suggest adding a mesh lid to the tanks to stop them getting out. It won't affect ventilation but will stop them getting out

Keeping two different hamster species together or letting them interact outside of their cage is a big no! I am glad to hear both hamsters were not harmed, it could of ended badly. As Engel suggested use mesh to make a secure lid to prevent it from happening again

Glad you made sure that Nugget couldnt escape again.

I have never heard of two species of hamsters getting along. What amazing luck thst your two have come out of their meetings unscathed!

It would be great to see pics.

I have a syrian and a roborovski. They are next door neighbours in barred cages. They seem to ignore each other completely.
