Default Best Robo Cage?

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to ask a quick question about what cage would be best for a roborovski hamster. I'm having no luck with find any suitable bins to make a bin cage in my area so wanted to know what the best commercial cages are as my hamster is stuck in a little pet shop cage until I can find a suitable sized one for her!

Edit: Would any of these be suitable?
Ferplast Criceti 15
Savic Plaza Rat
Zoozone

Lots of people use huge storage bins and they're great for robos! Mine had one but it did break so be careful if you stack them!

Criceti and plaza are great sizes BUT the bar spacing is too big. I go by the rule 'can I get my little finger through the bars?', if the answers yes, so can your hamster. Those cages have a bar spacing of 1/2 inch with is ok for adult Syrians and rats but too big for robos. I can't really comment on the zoo zone as I've never seen one in person but by looking at the dimensions it has 780sq inches of floor space which is above the minimum of 450sq inches and is deep enough to put at least 6 inches worth of substrate in so I think it'll be fine. Only thing I'm not sure about is the roof part, I'm not sure how wide the bars are. I've read that some robos can escape through it but was easily fixed by covering the bars with mesh. Out of those 3 you've mentioned I'd go zoozone as your getting a robo, just to be on the safe side

I used the Savic mickey 2xl for our Robo- it’s not too tall and had 7mm bar spacing. It’s basically the same cage as the hamster heaven but with narrow bar spacing. The downside is it isn’t cheap. Only sold by Amazon and costs about £83. It has a big front opening door which makes interaction with the hamster easier.

Out of the ones you listed, the Savic plaza would be too tall unless you made a full level for it. The Zoozone is fine but the lid needs meshing as it has very wide bar spacing.

If you can afford it I would get the Savic mickey 2xl. The mesh shelf needs removing. I added a different shelf. It’s a great cage and a good size.

If it’s too expensive then one of the zoozones or Ferplast duna tanks would be good. There is also a very good 100cm cage that is low sold by Amazon.de. Called the Elmo cage. They ship to the uk. It’s basically the same size as the maxi duna multy or zoozone 2 but a barred cage.

I started out with a tank but couldn’t get on with just top opening - especially with a shy Robo. I much preferred a front opening cage.

What's the bar sizing on the Alaska like? I know a lot of people use them too.

I don't know where you are but here in the UK pets at home do a XL hamster cage for Syrians. Floor space of 486 which again is above the minimum albeit not by much. I have it for my robo and ive had no problems with it. It cost me £45 I think. Downside the maximum amount of bedding is 6 inches unless you put something up the bars to stop bedding getting out. It has more floor space than my bin cage and that was done by Wham

Can you get a second hand aquarium or find some old furniture like a dresser and modify it?

Ooh is the XL P@H cage really big enough and has the right bar spacing? I may look into that and the zoozone then! I've noticed that she's started climbing the bars now that I've upgraded her wheel so maybe a tank style would be better

Maybe the tank will be better with the meshed lid but she's probably trying to climb and find her way out. What's her current set up like? Can we have photos? I know you said it's too small but maybe I could give ideas just to tide you over? Or a way to modify the cage without needing to buy another?

This is the cage I have: https://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/p...c-hamster-home

What I've done is taken out the middle platform and fill the entire bottom tray with bedding and the tube that goes round now goes into an underground box hide instead of just into the cage. I gave her a 6.5in wheel that she can run in but she refused to use it and started climbing the bars so I put her 5.5in one back in so she can at least run on that one. I try to scatter feed her too to make it interesting

Personally I think that is a bit small for a robo. But good point, I completely forgot about the Pets at home XL barred cage which is not a bad size. I wouldn't worry about the bar climbing as long as the cage is not too tall. Our robo bar climbed a bit.

This is the pets at home xl barred cage. It's about 70 x 40. A bit on the small side for a robo maybe as less floor area than a standard duna multy. I don't think the access/doors are that good either for interaction and handling, but then the top is easy enough to lift off (except you don't want a robo jumping out).

A better option size wise would be the standard duna multy. It's not too expensive. Robos can be very active though which is why I went with an 80 x 50 cage and if set up right you could go bigger. But the standard duna multy would be a better size than the pets at home one. And better value for money (about the same price).

Your current cage is 399sq inches.
P@H XL Syrian cage is 493sq inches (not 486 like I thought)
Duna multy is 504sq inches

The minimum floor space for any hamster is 450sq inches. Note that adding shelves doesn't add floor space but does add enrichment.
