Wooden Hamster Housing
Hi all,
I am planning on getting a Syrian Hamster. I would like a cage with at least 100cm length floor space. I like the look of the wooden ones but I wondered if there is a way of protecting the corners from chewing and waterproofing in a safe way.
Aquarium silicone? Sticking metal covers along the edges (if this even exists). Has anyone pet proofed their wooden cage successfully?
Thanks... I am getting excited for the new family member!!

The DIY linnman cage thread mentioned silicone. Check out the DIY Hamster Projects section (on the forum home it's almost a whole page down, that's where you'll find the DIY section). I recommend checking out the threads as you might prefer to build your own customised cage (and usually for a significantly lower price). (^_~)

Re: Wooden Hamster Housing
Which particular wood ones? You can reinforce corners - metal strips would be better than silicone for wood. However some hamsters will chew through a wood cage. Which country are you in? There may be other alternatives. Zooplus (Uk and Europe) has a good selection of 100cm Cages - the Barney and Alexander are great. There is also the 100cm Marrakesch - only the ends are wood and a hamster wouldn't be able to chew through those solid flat pieces. There's also a 100cm perspex tank style cage - the maxi duna multy - or the zoozone 2. The Zoozone 2 needs the lid meshing though as it has wide bars and isn't escape-proof without the lid being meshed.

Thank you I will have a look. There are some wooden ones on Amazon (UK) for about £50 which I hoped I could make hamster proof! I am not sure I could manage any sawing or hardcore DIY!!

If I cannot pull together a (Sort of DIY) cage from the other threads I think I will go for the Zooplus Skyline. It is expensive though but my main concern is having a safe stimulating space and I think I have seen some lovely examples of digging spaces in the tank type cages.

Re: Wooden Hamster Housing
I think I know the one you mean on amazon. Is it this one?

If so then you can put the door at the top instead of the bottom when putting it together (so you can have deeper substrate and still have front access). They are nice and large but only good for a hamster who wouldn't chew through the cage in half an hour!
Although the cages have limited bedding depth you can add enrichment by attaching things to the bars and roof. I also thinking front access is good - for interacting with the hamster.
The Barney cage is about £50. I have that. I think the bedding depth is something that varies between hamsters as well. I used to be a big fan of deep bedding - but not so much for syrians. Some syrians don't really dig at all. And if they have a good large house that mimics a burrow they don't seem to bother digging burrows. I tend to put 5 to 6" of bedding in. Shy hamsters can hide away too much with very deep bedding as well.
