Wheel for Multi Duna
Hi everyone
I bought a silent runner for Winnie my robo and she lives in a Multy Duna. The wheel seemed too big in there and she looked terrified of it.
I have a flying saucer and silent runner in her cage at the moment but I was looking for something a bit quieter as the silent spinner is not quiet at all.
Which wheel would you guys recommend please?

Re: Wheel for Multi Duna
Hello. The Silent runner is a great wheel but I opted for an open wheel for our robo as I was worried he'd miss the gaps/holes in the wheel when jumping out and hurt himself. Assume it's the 9" one. A 9" wheel is fine for a robo though
The 9" wood trixie wheel might be good. But it would need plastikoting or it'll get pee stained. Plastikote enamel paint (the water based paint on one) is pet safe, doesn't smell, quick and easy to paint on and it makes it wipe clean - I painted the cork surface as well as the wood wheel.

The plastikote comes in clear or various colours. Dry in a couple of hours although I usually wait till the next day to do a second coat. A little pot goes a long way.

I actually had the Rodipet version of this wheel which our robo loved, but it's a bit expensive. It's height adjustable.

Both are silent

Re: Wheel for Multi Duna
I have a flying saucer and a 6.5 inches for my dwarf hamster. He is still a baby and weighs about 25 grams at the moment. He loves the flying saucer but he goes so fast in it he gets thrown around violently and I’m afraid he will get brain damage from it in the long run.
So I gave him the 6.5 inches silent spinner instead. The flying saucer is now in his park, for short time usage. At first he had trouble turning the wheel, as he is so small but he got better at it (and he grew a little) and now he can turn it fine and he enjoys it.

Re: Wheel for Multi Duna
Flying saucer wheels are not a good idea. They don't allow a natural running style for hamsters(even if the manufacturers often give that myth as a reason to buy them), and they are very easy to fly off of. The flying saucers also have comparatively less actual running space where a hamster can actually run somewhat straight(still not fully straight), which is essentially a quarter of the wheel diameter in comparison to roughly half the diameter with proper upright wheels.
Silent Spinner wheels are notoriously poor quality so negative experience doesn't surprise me with those. They often don't even spin or are not silent, and they pose a serious safety risk to small pets since the design of them allows them to split in the center where the colored and white plastic pieces meet. This is true of any Silent Spinner style wheel including the imitations of them.
Silent Runners on the other hand are wonderful as they remain silent and are an upright wheel. They're enclosed on the front which can often make hamsters feel more secure while running, and while they do come in very limited color options and cost a lot more than most wheels they are quite possibly our best choice at the moment.
Comfort Wheels can work in a pinch but they are very noisy. They're an upright wheel which is absolutely necessary for hamsters and other small pets that would need a wheel, and they're often fairly affordable compared to the Silent Runner. They come in a decent variety of colors but you typically won't be able to choose the color if you order one online. The open metal stands aren't quite as safe as the solid metal stands of the Silent Runner, but you could probably get creative making a stand to go under the wheel along with something to cover the other open bits of the stand for safety.

Re: Wheel for Multi Duna
That’s great everyone thank you. She spends hours on the flying saucer and she’s had lots of practice so doesn’t fly off but totally agree with an upright being the best.
I do have a 9’’ silent runner but the cage height isn’t very tall so I couldn’t close the top and she was petrified of it. It’s just a pity they don’t do a slightly smaller one.

Re: Wheel for Multi Duna
A small petshop called Paradise Pets near me sells wheels by a Chinese manufacturer called Da Yang.
The wheels are fab. They are silent and turn easily, plastic so washable which is essential for my wheelpeeing dwarves, have a wide, open running surface so my fast Robo doesn't fall off and have a good, solid stand but can be attached to bars too.
The 10in wheel costs £18 and the 7in £12. Worth checking out small petshops.

Re: Wheel for Multi Duna
Our robo absolutely loved his flying saucer. He used both that and his wheel. They soon get the hang of it and don't fly off. Meanwhile just make sure there is nothing hard nearby! So he doesn't hit anything. Flying saucers are fine for dwarf hammies but for Syrians they do better with an upright wheel.

Which size of flying saucer is best for a robo? The medium or the tiny small sized one?

Re: Wheel for Multi Duna
I had the 6.5" one. The tiny one is far too small for any hamster.
