in an effort to make a larger cage area would attaching cages together with a tunnel work?

Attaching two cages with a tunnel doesn't really increase the floor space. This is called broken floorspace. If one of the cages is a good size then the other cage acts as more enrichment. Although, if you are planning to connect two smaller cages together to achieve a cage big enough, I would advise against this and get a bigger cage instead
