Default looking for new toys

Howdy! I have a syrian hamster named Larry, and I've had him for a couple months now. He's my first hamster and he's such an active little guy! I have a couple things in his terrarium like a wheel, chew toys, wooden hideout, and when supervised he has a little rope course thingy too! But I was wondering if there were any other toys or puzzles you would recommend?

One thing my Syrian likes is a “treat box” made from a cardboard toilet paper roll. To see how it’s done, take a look at the first suggestion in this YouTube video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVCWXrg6CwE

(If the link doesn’t work, search “Melody Hamster DIY” and it should bring up a video about 3 easy DIY hamster toys. And there are other ideas on the Web as well.)

Good luck!

I like these 55cm long Trixie ladders because you can bend them into different shapes. Keeps my hamsters entertained running over and under them. Ideal for terrariums too but i take the little hooks off so tiny paws can't get caught.

Some hamsters like a sand pit to dig and roll in.

You can play with your hamster by dangling a strand of cooked spaghetti in front of him and he will reach and grab for it then let him pull on it before handing it over for him to eat it.

Or put a raisin in a very small box, pierce holes in it so he can smell it then let him figure out how to get to it.

They like it when some food is hidden so they have to look for it or a slightly cracked nut so they have to work for it to get to it.

Very cute hamster your Larry.

If you don’t do so already perhaps scatter his food. Make your own food puzzles using cardboard boxes (cereal, tea bags, toilet rolls etc), hide some food in a box with some tissue and either suspend it from the cage or hide it under the substrate. Increase the difficulty to keep it interesting. The metal fruit skewer from zooplus is good for putting small pieces of fruit and veg on, I also add bits of cardboard in between as well. Make forage boxes and use different materials such as pebbles, shredded cardboard, herb mixes etc place it in a box and hide some food amongst it. Add more hides, hammocks, bendy bridges; different textures like rocks, wood, cork, aspen, moss etc. Also check out rat and bird toys

Bendy bridges are also good. Here are some of my favourite hamster toys for cage enrichment.

Hyacinth tunnel - chewable and they like the holes

Rat sputnik for hanging from the roof (also provides something to sit under so they feel less exposed), It works best hung next to a shelf so they can get in easily and with some substrate inside.

This cork log from rodipet. It's large for a tunnel but also makes something to climb over that's an interesting texture, and if next to a shelf can be used as a ramp instead of a ladder.

Trio of balls. I only use the hyacinth one in the cage - you can stick pumpkin seeds under the folds and they have fun getting the seeds out. The sisal one I unravel and use for sisal string for tying or hanging things to the cage (it's safe to chew which normal string isn't and chains are dangerous as they can get a foot caught). The wicker one I don't use as think it's a bit sharp.

Also have a look at Erin's Hamsters 10 toilet roll toys video.

If your hamster likes tunnels or tubes, how about getting him ferplast tubes? you can get them from pets at home and porton garden aquatic and pets for a very cheap price.

I find that they always keep my hamster entertained especially as i can change the layout of them as often as i need to. They can be attached to any cage by cutting out a few bars and attaching the cage connector piece.

In addition to straights, half straights, curves, u-turns, t- juctions and the lab, you can now also get an extendable tunnel piece which, however, can at the moment only be gotten on the official ferplast website for the full £8.00.
