Cool Attaching two cages

Hello all, I have recently acquired two Hamster Heaven cages for the grand total of £40.00 and in turn wish to connect them together without the use of tubes. I have had a bad experience with tubes and Syrian hamsters in the past and do not wish to make the same mistake again.
I have recently spoken to someone who has attached two Alaska cages together length-ways by removing one side panel from each cage which then is re-attached by sturdy garden meshed wire and cable ties. The result is fantastic and has given her Syrian an incredibly long habitat. But is there anyone here who has also done something similar? I have my dremmel, I am going out to buy the mesh that is suitable and I am patient, but ya know when you hesitate out of fear of destroying something? Well that's currently where I'm sat

I've not done this myself but have seen various instances of this being done. The only thing that would concern me would be the exposed edges of the 2 bases on the ends where you remove the panels? Sounds like it might become a weak point if you have a hammy that can't resist a good chew so that would be something to consider

Thank you for replying
I've been thinking about it a lot and to be fair, as much as I love the idea, connecting the two seems it could cause a bit of hassle. Measuring it for its total length, I have discovered I have no cabinet long enough and not the adequate amount of empty floor space, and in turn if I needed to ever move it, that alone could cause problems - the connections breaking and me in turn ending up damaging two good cages. I think I'll simply save up and get the Borneo as I've nothing but heard good things about it

It sounds amazing but a hassle! I can't see how you would join them at the two bases - surely there would be a bit where the bars didn't fit.

I did look at swapping a cage door and cutting a panel out once (ie adding a front door to a Falco cage idea) but decided it was too much hassle and could ruin two cages as you say!

The Hamster Heaven is a great cage for a dwarf hamster by the way. Good size. A bit cramped for a Syrian but depends how you set it up and which wheel you have.

Have you looked at the Barney on Zooplus? I think I would prefer that to the Borneo - it isn't as tall so doesn't have the fall risk issues/extra shelving needed so much. Plus it has greater floor area as it's deeper - makes quite a difference.

Or did you mean the 120cm Borneo? If it's the 120cm Borneo then that would be great. My only concern with that cage is the height - you can get round it by either having a full level - or shelves that effectively make a full level with protection over the entrance part - or alternatively putting cardboard or perspex round the inside of the bars and having 20 to 25cm deep substrate (effectively reducing the height).

Thank you for replying Serendipity

Exactly and considering I got the two Hamster Heavens for such a good price and both are in fantastic condition, I don't want to ruin them.

Sorry, yes I did mean the 120cm Borneo but, as you have said, it's the height that's worrying me. An additional level would definitely be something I'd go for however your idea with the perspex is pretty fab! My little man, who I only just got on Friday, does enjoy digging and making tunnels within his substrate so providing more space and more of a chance for him to dig and tunnel around would be fab. He's already tunnelled himself beneath his megazorb substrate which seems to be holding out pretty well and I am sure he's set up quite an underground network

Ooo don't tempt me. I saw some beautiful little Robo's and Dwarfs at my local store last week and my partner adores them. He loved how speedy they were and was stood watching them for quite a while

I had a robo in the Savic Mickey 2XL which is the same as the Hamster Heaven but with narrow bars. Not sure I'd put a robo in the Hamster Heaven though, I'd be worried about the bar spacing. But a Russian dwarf would be fine
