Default Good cage for a winter white dwarf hamster?

I've gotten a winter white dwarf hamster (i think - i know he's a dwarf and he looks like a winter white but im not 100% sure - the petstore didnt have a label???)

i feel like his cage might be too small for long term - as its already crowded with some of the toys i have put in and would like to expand his cage in the future

im just not sure on what cage to get him, i had some ideas such as the Alaska hamster cage from zooplus - but im not sure about having a side door just in case he manages to somehow open it

i know theres bincages - but i dont have the supply's to make one (no sharp knives ETC) so i wont be able to make a bin cage

does anyone know of a (preferably low budget) hamster cage i could get from the UK (also preferrably something i could order online) that would be suitable for my hamster long term

thanks in advance everyone!!! - also sorry if this is in the wrong forum section

Congratulations on your hammie! Do you know the dimensions of his current cage?

The Alaska is a wonderful choice - it's the one I have for my Syrian and I haven't had any problems with it. I don't actually know of many cages without side doors - all of the ones I would probably recommend (Alaska, Barney, Alexander) have them.
I think a tank / aquarium could be a good option and you can get them pretty cheap second-hand. Of course, you could always go for a store-bought one (Savic Plaza, Hamster Heaven 80, Maxi Duna Multy (no side door)) but they tend to be more expensive.

I've also heard good reviews of the Zoozone 2, which is spacious and has a door at the top, but you'd need to cover it with wire mesh because the bar gaps are too wide for most hamsters.

Hopefully someone else has some good recommendations!

The Ferplast Duna Multy is an option. About 70cm by 45cm - a bit smaller than the Hamster Heaven.

If you can find a used Hamster Heaven that is a good option too. Better than the Alaska in my view as it's lower. The Alaska is also an option but there are fall risks for dwarf hamsters so it would need setting up really carefully.

Or if you could stretch to it, Zooplus sell the Hamster Heaven for about £50 (best used without the penthouse and tubes as a straight cage). It comes with plugs to block off the tube holes.

It's actually £64 on zooplus at the moment but it's usually £50.

You can often find second hand Hamster Heavens on ebay quite cheap though.

If I remember rightly the Alaska actually has a bar thing that comes down across the door to hold it in place. You can always add a bulldog clip or such like as added security if you are worried.

Yes, it has a bar to secure the door with but it is a high cage and more suitable for a Syrian. Mine lives in one. I think a lower cage like the Ferplast Duna Multy Serendipity suggested would be better for a dwarf.

My Robo lives in a fish tank which has the advantage of being able to add really deep substrate but you would have to make a meshed lid which involves some serious DIY.

Yes the Alaska is a bit high for a dwarf- it almost needs a full level for safety. The Duna multy is about the same price.

Congratulations on your hamster
My Winter White lives in the Skyline Terranium and absolutely loves it. It comes with two houses and a seesaw which my Gleb absolutely loves. It is massively secure and you can see from every angle. It’s also easy to clean and meets minimum hamster space requirements. Here’s the link to buy, it is £75 but usually new customers get money off! Its also well worth the money in my opinion as you also get the houses and toy. Hope I helped!

Cadmium is the first hamster I've had in... er... more than a decade, so I don't have much experience with a range of cages/tanks - so feel free to disregard if this isn't helpful.

Cadmium is a "Russian dwarf", so probably a Campbell's/Winter White hybrid and she's in a detolf. If you've got the space (it's a long enclosure) and someone to help you with the initial construction (three glass panels is not a thing best attempted alone) I would recommend it; Cadmium seems happy, there's lots of space for toys and hides, glass sides mean you can have reasonably deep substrate for digging (Cadmium is a burrower) and I was happy with the price for what you get. One caveat; you will need some kind of lid, especially if you opt for deep substrate, to avoid enterprising hams pulling a Houdini. I'm aware some people don't use a lid for the detolf, but personally I wouldn't risk it.
