Default The cage i'm planning on building.

I'm planning on building a cage for one dwarf hamster soon and I want to ask if the space i'm planning is big enough. I want two levels and they measure 448 sq inches each. That would be 896 sq inches all together is that ok?

I just got my hamster but from what I’ve learned, you don’t count additional levels as floor space, as hamsters are borrowers, not climbers. You can build a platform to get the water bowl and food bowl out of the way if you really want to.

Otherwise, you need to build as big as you can on one single floor, and provide deep layers of bedding to allow your baby to burrow (6 inches at least).

That would count as 448 square inches floor area Levels are a bonus, but floor area is more important. They are basically ground dwellers and diggers and bury things. What are the dimensions of the 448 square inches - it might be fine if it's about 70cm by 40cm. With levels also and dwarf hamsters you need to look out for fall risks from a height. If it's a solid sided diy cage that should be ok.

I believe around 450 sq inches of floor space is considered bare minimum in the USA and already way better than what you see in stores, so it's a very good start.
However, my dwarf's DIY cage is about 840 sq inches and, honestly, I'd reeeeally like it to be bigger. He's so full of energy and likes to run and explore, and I believe all dwarfs are like this. Plus, I'm pretty sure you'd want to add tunnels and hides, and toys, and puzzles, and bridges, and so so many other things to provide enrichment... And find yourself not being able to fit everything in 450 sq inches So I'd suggest to go even bigger if possible.
