Default Suggestions for alternatives to the Detolf

Hello,

I am currently in the UK and looking for an alternative hamster cage for my female Syrian hamster. She chewed through the detolf, so nothing with any wood. But I'm struggling as glass tanks are to expensive. She is currently in a 700 square inch bin, but this is a lot less space than the detolf so it's not ideal. I also think she may chew threw the bin too as there are some grooves on the inside.

Keep checking Gumtree, ebay etc for second hand fish tanks. Sometimes large ones come up at reasonably priced.

And get her some Whimzee dog chews. Hopefully she'll chew them instead.

She has whimzees which she likes, she has some other types of chew too. I have been looking on gumtree but not many people deliver. Thank you for your reply.

So she's a chewer In that case a cage isn't going to be any good either as she may chew through the plastic base. That does just leave you with glass tanks really. You can get second hand fish tanks quite cheap even if they look grungy and need a lot of cleaning up. In my area I have never been able to find any when looking.

I would think about getting one from Junglepets. They make custom tanks for hamsters that come with a ready made mesh lid. This is the largest one they do. It's a 4 foot tank but not very deep - on the other hand neither is the detolf. Costs £94.99 including the lid. They will do custom sizes though and give you a price for a tank whatever size you want. I think when I asked about a slightly larger size depth wise it was going to cost about £125. They will also leave out the glass shelves if you don't want them.

Where in the UK are you based Laura? I have been on the lookout for a bigger tank myself and seen some too far away for me on gumtree but may be local to you. Also search for exo terra. I had a chewer a few years back and my exo terra Viv proved the only thing she couldn't escape/chew out of. I've seen some relatively cheap in Bristol and manchester of late...

Ah! I was considering the exoterra but couldn't find any hamster reviews! I'm in Liverpool but I don't drive and most people don't deliver

Could you find 'a man (or a lady) with a van' if you found something local, sometimes it can only cost £10-£20 for delivery.

I would love an exo terra - hardly ever see them second hand and they cost a bomb new! I would be a bit concerned about a chewy hammy chewing the plastic front edges though.

Cheapest option (but would mean diy) would be to put different ends on the detolf or fix metal on the inside of the wood end panels. Does she chew the inner bars in the detolf or not?

The plastic edges of exo terra are super tough. I had a gerbil who was a super chewer in mine between Dali and Eddie and there's not even a scratch to the plastic. I've not looked as far west as Liverpool for second hand exo terra but have seen some between £50-100 on second hand selling sites like gumtree and preloved recently, just keep an eye out. And if you have a friend/family member with a car, they do fit on the back seat. It may also be worth an ask on Freecycle/freegle for a fish tank. Lots of people will deliver locally for petrol money on there if you ask politely.
