Default Re: Suggestions for alternatives to the Detolf

I did a kind of DIY: took a big rabbit cage and meshed it all over. So far, the only cons are:
1) it has a maximum substrate depth unless I get creative and heighten the sides with something like carboard so that there isn't hemp all over my floor
2) it can be a bit tricky to move things around, as it opens on the front and I have it on the floor, so the angle isn't great.
The total is about the price of a detolf, you can even find second hand rabbit cages dirt cheap.
It's really hard plastic though, harder than a bin cage but still plastic, if she's a super chewer maybe you are better off with a glass tank.

Cheapest option (but would mean diy) would be to put different ends on the detolf or fix metal on the inside of the wood end panels. Does she chew the inner bars in the detolf or not?
She did chew the internal bars so perhaps it's for the best that we're moving her out.

I've not looked as far west as Liverpool for second hand exo terra but have seen some between £50-100 on second hand selling sites like gumtree and preloved recently, just keep an eye out. And if you have a friend/family member with a car, they do fit on the back seat. It may also be worth an ask on Freecycle/freegle for a fish tank. Lots of people will deliver locally for petrol money on there if you ask politely.
Thank you Dali's Mum That is really helpful for me and others to know! I had always worried about those plastic strips.

It is a great tank option as it has front opening doors and about 15cm below the doors for bedding - so like a glass cage really. I cannot believe how much the new price is now - it's gone up about 30% in price.

Lau, If it helps I have done cardboard in one wired cage and tied it on with jute, and in another cage I have used water hyacinth mats tied on with jute. Looks nicer than the cardboard, but obviously costs a few £. I have filmed a video on it, but need to edit it still.

Serendipity, I wasn't aware that there were no exo terra reviews for use as a hamster cage. I'm having a busy week, but once my feet have time to touch the floor I shall get something put together. I do love the exo terra. I don't think I'll ever go back to barred cages.
