Default Need help with cleaning a hamster bin after it passes

So I recently had a hamster that passed away. I was going to clean it myself but then my dad did it for me. He took out all the bedding and wiped it down then he made a light bleach solution and put all of the inner cage items in it. I found out a while later and took them out myself and rinsed them and let them air dry. So I was wondering if the items like the wheel and plastic hides and plastic bin are still safe for a new hamster? It doesn't smell like chemicals or anything. I also let them soak in plain water too to try to remove the bleachiness. advice is appreciated.

I am not sure to be honest. Anything cleaned with bleach would need to be very well rinsed and aired to ensure there is no residue or smell left. But personally I find plastic items can absorb the strong smell of bleach. Ceramic items would be fine.

It's a shame as hamster safe pet disinfectant and airing would have been sufficient. Our vet uses the Beaphar one. I would see if there is any smell on the plastic items after a week. Hamsters have a much stronger sense of smell than we do so if it even smells slightly then it would be noticeable for them.

When mine passed I washed the bin with hot water and dish soap. I would never use bleach, it can penetrate plastic.

Perhaps you could try soaking the items again in a mild detergent solution for a few days? That might be enough to eliminate the bleach smell.
I have used an old cage and toys, etc, for a new hamster. They were just washed and put away (for several years!) and washed again when I retrieved them from the loft. The new hamster did not have any problem with them.

thx for the replies, I have rinsed them out with water and let them sit out for a couple days and the smell is slowly going away. I think i will let it sit out for like a week longer. If the smell does not go away i will just get new supplies which will be a shame since i would be losing around 60 dollars.

Have you tried putting them inside a container or bin bag with a bowl of bicarbonate soda, you could leave it for a few days or even a week or 2. This method is very good for soaking up smells.

I'd try bicarbonate of soda and warm water, soak it for a while, hopefully it will work.
It normally gets ride smells.
