I am worried
So I got a male robo dwarf hamster named phil a couple days ago.
For a cage, I got it an aquarium, and the area is 360 sq. inches. It has a wheel, some tunnels, and a house.
I feel like it is too small of an enclosure, and I am worried that my hamster is stressed. I cant afford a bigger aquarium, and my parents are too busy to go to the store so I can make a bigger bin cage tomorrow.
What do I do?????

Re: I am worried
that cage is a bit small. the minimum is 450 sq. in. does he have lots of things to do? chew toys and such? scatter feeding can also keep them busy.
you aren't too far below the recommended minimum, so for a little bit, as long as you keep the cage busy, you should be fine. my male syrian lived in a 20L tank for a month before i was able to upgrade him (long story, it was a gift, my mom didn't believe he needed a bigger cage even though i insisted, then i bought and made a bin cage).
the next time you are able, go to a store such as (depending what country you are in) Canadian Tire, Target or Big Lots to find a good sized bin. My syrian is now living in a 665 sq. in 104-L bin cage that i bought from Canadian Tire. The same/similar bin is available at both target and big lots i believe.
do not stress, phil will be fine for now! watch for signs of stress. as long as you give him plenty of bedding (5+ inches i believe), toys, hides and chews he will be okay until you have the chance to upgrade!

He should be ok , just upgrade to a bigger sized cage as soon as you can.. I hope you can return the aquarium and get your money back.

Re: I am worried
My adopted Robo lives in an aquarium that's considered too small by many but space was limited.
Plenty of substrate is important and I've increased it to 8in so my Robo can burrow and make tunnels. A sand bath is also important but use sand not dust from the pet shop or play sand which I believe needs to be baked to dry it out.
Add cardboard toilet rolls to run through or cardboard boxes to play in. As long as he has plenty to keep him busy he should be alright but watch out for signs of stress.
My Robo seems fine and quite excitedly runs around and jumps on his wheel then runs really fast etc.

Re: I am worried
Thanks for the advice. I got it a 600 sq inch bin cage today. I has tunnels, a wheel, chew toys, puzzle toys, a sand bath, and a wheel. Again, thanks for the help.

Re: I am worried
Hi, you may want to try a plastic bin. I made a home for our dwarfs using the largest plastic bin sold. I forget the exact gallon size but there are DIY videos about it on YouTube. They are very inexpensive so I was able to make one for each of them. It does involve a little bit of work and if you can buy a hot knife I highly recommend it. It makes cutting the plastic much easier. Home Depot carries everything you would need. Check out the videos on YouTube and see if it is something you could do. Cost should be under 30.00 for all materials except a hot knife which goes for about 15.00. They do have other suggestions if you don’t want to spend the extra money for it. Good luck!
