Default Looking for ideas

I'm surrounded by pet shops and Skye, my little blue car has developed a habit of driving there.

There are soo many hamsters up for adoption. One poor little sod called Gordon has been there since March!!
I really want to give a dwarf a home but he'd need to live in a disused fire place.

The space available is only 35cm deep but i could go up to 90cm wide. I can't extend the fire surround or we would trip over it and we are both naturally clumsy. Would it be visible at all or should i drop the idea? What are your opinions dear people of Hamster Central?

And what are the options should it be an option:

a) an aquarium? checked Amazon, 80cmx35cmx40cm is available with long delivery time and quite expensive

b) a DIY project made from wood and glass or perspex?

c) convert a piece of furniture i.e a trunk?

d) Ikea? no space for a detolf though, any other possibilities?

Hmm. I can get wood, glass, have lots of tiles and all the tools needed plus a very capable, retired man about the hoose.....who wants fish.

Hmm indeed! As you have capable retired man available (I’m ignoring his wish for fish as they don’t compare to hams hee hee hee!), I would go for it. Where there is a will there is a way as they say. For what it is worth, I think hams live for such a short time relatively speaking that they should be as well looked after as they can be for as long a time as possible. If Gordon has been there since March that is quite a long time out of a short life. He would be better with you being loved and cared for and I know from your other postings that you would (somehow) make an enriched environment for him to live in X

If you dont mind it sticking out by just 5cm the Duna Multy is okay for a dwarf, especially an older one.

Well, that's the problem, i would mind it sticking out by 5cm because one of us would trip over it and we are both elderlyish. The lounge is small and i already rearranged the furniture to accommodate Henry's Alaska.
35cm would contain it within the surround but could a hamster cope with 35cm? I think a Robo who has been stuck in the pet shop for months might...i hope.

I had an idea last night that might work so i'm off to Ikea now to see if its possible. As Charlie D says, where theres a will theres a way, got to find the way.

This is so much fun! I also want to be there getting involved! I’m struggling to picture this...you mean like a real fire place? You want to slot the cage into that area without nothing sticking out? I just want to be on the same wave length. Cage decorating and setting up...yay!!! So excited! IKEA like you said might be the best bet....

I’m so so excited! Send pictures on every step.

I would suggest you have something a little bit deeper that sticks out, and put a fireguard round it! Then you would only trip over the fireguard (less likely as it's tall enough to notice), not the cage. eg this

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Clippasafe-...gateway&sr=8-5

Or better still - build a playpen/fireguard!

35cm deep is a bit narrow, even with the length, but with 90cm it "should" be ok, depending on the dwarf hamster and if set up carefully.

Some people used to use clearseal tanks like this. You would need to make a lid

https://www.jnk-aquatics.co.uk/clear...lass-tank.html

Junglepets also make tanks for hamsters that come with lids. This one is 36 x 15 x 15 but they will make it any size you want if you email them.

I would think you would need front opening though, if it was to stay in situ. Off to have a look at front opening options. Could you do 36.5cm deep? That would be maximum depth of the bars - the base would be less deep.

https://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small...ter_mice/40878

Personally I would go with a hamster heaven (without all the plastic stuff except one shelf) and put a protective guard around it. 80 x 50 big front opening door.

How much height do you have? Any 80cm cage, on a stand or table, would be high enough not to be kicked/tripped over maybe.

I don't like that cage Serendipity but thanks for looking and suggesting. I think its too high for a dwarf and not enough base for deep substrate. I've never had a dwarf and only go by what people here say about them.

I've just been to Ikea but my idea wasn't visible. I am now looking into rearranging the bike room BUT it is the room where Henry free roams. Whould he be affected by another hamster in the same room? Might take his mind off from stripping the wall paper. Wouldn't the dwarf feel isolated upstairs all by himself? Henry would love that but he's not moving upstairs. He's staying put in the lounge with me.

What's the general opinion on the Kerry Terrarium?
I prefer bar cages but for a dwarf who's likely to burrow and build tunnels a tank may be more suitable or am i mistaken?

I would say it's fine if you placed another hamster in henry's free roaming place. As long as he can't interact directly with the other hamster. e.g.. bar cage on the floor and henry can go up to it.

Not sure how you have Henry's cage but is it possible to build a shelf above it and place another hamster cage on that?

I'm like you I prefer the bar cages, but I have been experimenting recently so I can get more substrate and tunnels in - I have used both cardboard on the outside of the cage, tied with jute and also tried waterhyacinth mats tied on the inside of a cage.. So far I think the waterhyacinth mats look nicer, but both do a pretty much good job at keeping the substrate in the cage. The problem with the cardboard on the outside is substrate gets stuck between the cardboard and the metal bars. Which is fine, until I lift the cage off if I am doing a big clean. Like I said it's an experiment, but it works quite well.

I hope you can work it out that you can find space for another cage and hamster - so excited for you if you do.

The junglepets tank looks good. Must have a better look later. Thank you for the link Serenpidity.

No Luna, Henry's cage is on a table near my 50's glass collection so no space on top.

Must go into work now and will look at more options later.
What are water hyacinth mats?
