What is the price for boredom breakers your side? They work very well and I place mine on the inside so when you lift off the cage they stay in place and don't interfere.

Have you thought of taking the idea I used and placing mesh over a bigger sized cage? My cage is 100cm x 50cm but you can get slighlty smaller.

Don't have any ideas to contribute but I've been stalking this thread and really hoping Gordon (or another hamster) gets to go home with you. I'm sure any hamster with you would be really happy and it's so lovely to hear that another hamster will be given a good home. Please do update us on what you decide to do, we would love to see the new hamster and its new home.

Sending you a high five along the coast, up to Dubai, down to Bangkok and a quick dip down to you in Malaysia.

Also hoping that another hamster gets owned by someone great☺️

Hi all and thank you for all your contributions!

One of my local P&H stocks the hamster haven so getting a suitable cage isn't an issue but i'd like the dwarf to live in the lounge and there's no space.
The boredom breaker mats i like and are inexpensive and yes, could be used to increase the substrate depth.
I'm looking for a tank to fit in the fire surround without sticking out. Have seen one on ebay 163 mi away. Have been in touch with someone who runs a hamster rescue who told me a 60cmx30cmx30cm tank is big enough for one. Went down to the aqua centre to have a look at one. No way!! The toadstool alone would take up a quarter of the tank.
I may buy a hamster haven as long as i could return it, put it in place in the lounge then wait and see who trips over it first. I'm not that patient and once i get something in my head i want to get on with it. I have it in my head but haven't been able to locate the right dwarf enclosure yet. And now work is intervening with life again. Must go.

Ria...in South Africa we have the fireplace in the middle of the room which is a more modern version then we have the fireplaces that are built out from the wall. I am assuming the fireplace is extending from the wall. Have you checked that the fireplace has been properly sealed. If not, do a hand test by picking a hand and arm and moving it slowly from area to area under the ceiling of the closed up fireplace. By using one arm you don’t get confused because your writing hand and arm will be warmer. Stick your head and shoulders in there too to check that the air being breathed in the space isn’t going to make you cough or smells like chimney. You know that chimney smell that makes your lungs burn? Just check in case it gives your hamster a tight chest.

I think Serendipity mentioned putting a fire grate around it. Would you still trip?

Is it possible to get s picture of it without getting too personal in your space? Would be great to see what area we are looking at.

So exciting!

Oh the pressure!

The rescue place just got in touch to tell me that they have two dwarf baby boys looking for a home. One black and one grey. Am i interested? Yes, i want one but need to get something sorted asap!
I haven't actually seen Gordon or Waldo because they were asleep and hidden under hay.
What do i do? Go to the rescue place or the pet shop? There are so many homeless hamsters.

High-five Schwartzie! It's just that the pet stores here provide so much misleading information that I'd think about 95% of the hamsters here aren't given their basic needs (a lot of owners are well-intentioned, but it's misplaced because they unknowingly invest in things like crittertrails). That's why every hamster that is given a good home such a delight to hear about!

Yeah, some of those tanks marketed as suitable are really way too small. I was just cleaning out one of Louise's hides that came with her original cage and realised how ridiculously small it was (great for her as a Robo to snuggle in, but an adult Syrian would hardly have room to turn around in it). Hopefully you are able to get a suitable enclosure soon.

The pressure indeed
I can only got from a recent experience (which I will tell you all about next week), what does your heart say - go with that one.
