Re: Looking for ideas
I've only ever had Syrians, so not sure what other hamster habits are like, but i would just leave it all and see how Gordon gets on with it all. I'm sure he will love it after being stcuk at P@H
I wouldn't worry about the hamsters, I always think of hamster rescue places where they have them all stacked up on top of each other etc. I am sure you will be fine.

Re: Looking for ideas
I won't worry about the hamsters smelling each other either, I think they should be fine.
I agree with you that you are still giving him a far better home than he'd had. Their lives are so short and it's really sad that a lot of it is spent in pet shops, and there's a high chance they will be sold off in small cages to people who haven't done research. If I were a hamster, I'd choose to go with you, because otherwise I won't know how long I'd be stuck in the pet shop, and there's a very much higher chance the next potential owner didn't do any research.
How big is the wheel? I won't worry about it if his back doesn't arch while he's on it. I think Dwarfs are easier than Syrians in the sense that their minimum wheel size is smaller, and they can snuggle up in smaller hideouts very comfortably. You could order one online later if this wheel doesn't work out though, I've had to order one myself.
Love your set-up, it's really beautiful and looks so natural that it'll be quite comfortable for your hamster.

Re: Looking for ideas
Ria...I’ve had an idea...
Your hubby is a DIY person so what about doing this to create more bedding depth. I read that they love to burrow - I just read that now - was wanting to have some knowledge to try and support and help you. What about your hubby making a wooden frame to go onto the top of the tank then mesh and a frame so that most of the tank can be bedding and then you have the frame and mesh as the cage part. You can then see him tunneling though the glass. It’s just an idea.

Re: Looking for ideas
That’s what we are doing with Ragna’s new cage setup. We are creating a frame to go on the top. So exciting Ria!

Re: Looking for ideas
A top frame would definitely help, especially if it was large enough to raise the wheel up high enough to allow for 8-12 inches of substrate.

I need to see that frame, either Schwartzie's or Ria's or anyone's, really. It sounds amazing.
Ria, please update us on whichever hamster you get, I'm excited for you and the hamster.

Re: Looking for ideas
At the moment Gordon's home has a flat roof because i want to wait and see what he likes to do....once he comes out of his sand pit.
Yes, Gordon was still there and he came home with me. He was a hamster that didn't sell so was put up for adoption and is around seven months old now.
He travelled in a small pet carrier and climbed into his home from there, sniffed around, found the sand pit and hasn't come out of it yet. He must have spent his entire life in a tiny tank, never seen sand or substrate deep enough to burrow.
I'll post more photos once he has settled in and made his tank his home.
I worried about the tank being too small but he is so tiny that he can run around in the sand pit.
