Gulp...

The right cage and you feeling happy with it in your home is really important in you and the hamster settling. I would base my decision on getting the cage sorted then seeing if those two were still available then going from there.

It’s a tough call...

That's why every hamster that is given a good home such a delight to hear about!

Yeah, some of those tanks marketed as suitable are really way too small. I was just cleaning out one of Louise's hides that came with her original cage and realised how ridiculously small it was (great for her as a Robo to snuggle in, but an adult Syrian would hardly have room to turn around in it). Hopefully you are able to get a suitable enclosure soon.
When I walk into petshops I want to freak when I see those tiny cages...so sad!

That is so very true, you are a wise woman. I would be compromising with the hamster haven which i couldn't have in the lounge. The fireplace is safe and blocked off professionally so nothing to worry there but i need to find a long tank....

Junglepets does a tank which, with a little adjustment, i could fit into the fire surround. Its a 30inx15inx12in 88.67l tank. I think it adds up to the minimum recommended floor space for a dwarf but i'm not 100% sure and of course i'd add a lot of enrichment. A lid i could make.

What's the general feedback on this one please?

The longer, 36in tank i couldn't fit in because i had measured wrongly when i said i could go up to 90cm.

I wouldn't recommend it. It's not a good size for a dwarf of any kind, at least for a permanent situation.

No matter how much enrichment you add, it'll lack in burrowing depth as it is also fairly short once you add in height for all the enrichment items.

As far as the minimum goes, more people lean towards an 80 cm x 50 cm minimum(with 100 cm x 50 cm being preferred) for any dwarf species(especially since you don't know which species you're getting). This is quite a bit larger than a 30 inch x 15 inch tank even if it may not seem like a big difference! Other than what people actually observe to work in most cases, you'd be looking at the "American" minimum of 450 square inches which has been found not to work long term for the majority of hamsters, even robos.

So, after a lot of measuring, contemplation, looking into option and with all the help and input from you good people, thank you, very much appreciated, I have now decided to go for the only tank that fits into the disused fireplace, a 30x15x12 tank. Not ideal, I know.
My reckoning was that a Robo who has lived at P@H since March and who knows where or how he lived before he was abondend would probably like my tank and all the attention and care I want to give him. Small or not, it's got to be a better place to live out whatever he has left of his short live.
I had an interesting conversation with a P@H employee today when I learned that a lot of the hamsters available for adoption had simply been left in a box at their back door!
The main reason hamsters are made homeless is because they bite which of course is mainly down to ignorance of the owners leading to ill treatment of the hamsters.
The lady's daughter adopted a "biter", first of all she put him in a bigger cage and then spent a lot of time slowly gaining his trust. It took a while but now he is a delightful and happy hamster.
Amazon just delivered the long, bendy bridge which I may add yet and possibly a pear tree twig from the garden.
Got to wait until tomorrow when my OH will make the lid for the tank. I'm going with my heart Luna and will get Gordon if he's still there tomorrow after work.
Here are some pics. I want a bigger wheel but could only find the medium silent spinner today after trying five pet shops. The glass sand bath/wheel is supported by a tunnel underneath and the toadstool/food station sits on top of a Ferplast guinea pig house minus the front panel to act as a cellar. Thin layer of wood chips to give the cellar a grip and the rest is Kaytee C&C Camo.

Forgot to say that the coconut hide and a tunnel are almost underground. I'll wait and see how the hamster likes to live and may have to adjust accordingly.

The cage is minimum size recommended and you have certainly put a lot of interesting items in there for a little hammie to explore. I am glad you are going with your heart, fingers x'd for you that Gordon is still there tomorrow.

Yes, so do I. I haven't even seen him because he was asleep last time I was there. I've added the bendy bridge. Did I put too much in it?
My OH came home with some good quality, goldy coloured mesh so he'll make a nice lid tomorrow with brass knob handles. Nice little project for him.
Wonder if Henry will be able to sense another hamster. They will be across the room from each other and its a smallish room.
