Default Liana wood

Has anyone heard of or used Liana wood?

Came across it in the bird section at Jeeves or Jollys (forgot name of pet shop) and it looks nice. Says its fully digestable for birds but does that apply to hamsters?

Didn't ask shop assistant because their knowledge is often limited and unreliable.

I wouldn't take the risk. There's pretty much nothing known on the wood itself as far as safety goes, and numerous things that are fairly safe for bird species are not safe for hamsters such as eucalyptus or certain spices.

Hi Ria ☺️

That’s a good question because I’ve seen really cool branches and such in the bird section at the petshop as well. I googled wood for hamsters and they said to go for hard wood not soft wood. I then google what hard wood is and it says that hard wood is deciduous. I have copied what I read on the internet...

All trees reproduce by producing seeds, but the seed structure varies. In general, hardwood comes from a deciduous tree which loses its leaves annually and softwood comes from a conifer, which usually remains evergreen. Hardwoods tend to be slower growing, and are therefore usually more dense.

What is the difference between hardwood and softwood? | NZ Wood

Liana wood is from a deciduous tree from tropical climates and is a hard wood.

When I chose my logs and branches etc I stayed away from conifers and yew trees without knowing that they are soft wood which is harmful to hamsters.

Liana wood according to specifications isn’t harmful to hamsters. I can see why conifers and yew are ruled out - if you smell their bark and leaves it doesn’t smell good. It has an acidic or sour smell to it.

I googled what trees are found in Syria and it’s interesting to see that most of Syria consists of conifers...lol! The other part are mostly oaks. I’m guessing the Syrians came from the parts that weren’t conifers or maybe we all got it wrong. Interesting!

The mind boggles.
Thanks for feedback Amityville and Schwartzie.

So according to the internet Liana wood is a hardwood and should be safe to use....but i never considered the possible use of chemicals to treat it. The 100% Natural statement on the label could simply mean that its not made of plastic with all the advertising gimmicks around nowadays.

Maybe safer to use branches from my pear tree but how do i kill the bugs? Bake them or freeze them?

100% natural doesn't have much meaning sadly. As far as safety goes, you're still within questionable at best territory between hamster specific(not gerbil, rat, etc as different things are toxic to different species) safety and chemical treatment.

I'd stick to well known hamster specific safe woods that aren't treated other than kiln drying or baking, and skip out on the risk entirely since there are just so many guaranteed safe options!

Like playsand you can bake it...give it a good nuking! Lol! The logs and branches you buy in the shops and online are terribly expensive as we both know. Baking hardwood branches that you know isn’t chemically treated is the way to go. Please send pictures...yay!

Yes, i'll bake pear and hazel branches from the garden. Baked eco earth yesterday to dry it out.
Henry's home has no more room and i can't move anything out because he uses everything he's got in there now.

Looking for things for the dwarf now once i figure out where to put him and into what and who??

Got the last toadstool at Aldi yesterday after someone here (10 minutes?) mentioned that their hamster likes to sit in the oil burner. Thanks for the tip.
Henry's home looks quite natural and because he likes heights and doesn't burrow its lofty.

A dwarf makes me think of colour, fairy tales, burrows and hobbits.....
