Thanks for your advice...I will wrack my brains on how to create platforms for each width so he has two platforms at each end.

I get the ones that are open underneath and in the largest size so they make an interesting thing to climb over as well as to run through. They also make a good ramp up to a shelf if wedges under it or next to it. I find Syrians aren’t too bothered about a sand bath but I use sand in a litter tray and they will use a litter tray (and maybe sit in it for a wash as well). The corner litter trays are good. Then the cage stays clean and dry longer and you just empty the litter tray every few days. The trick is to wait to see where the hamster chooses to have a toilet area then spot clean that area and pop the litter tray there. Putting a tiny bit of the peed on substrate on top of the sand first time encourages them to use it.

I have several bridges, three large ones that i was planning on using as hideouts rather than as bridges per say I'll slowly add more things, the cork logs are some of my top choices.
My initial plan is setting a large jar as a litter tray inside his hideout, although I might just connect it so that he has more space inside there. I'll change it as I go. If he isn't going to use the large sand area I don't want to take a lot of his limited space with a large place. I hope he likes the spot I put the tray in, if he choses other I'll change it as you said
I never thought of the shelves! I've been thinking and was planning of using a shoe storage thingy as shelves. It's high but not too high and seems quite nice, made from wood and metal, no pointy parts. It's written down for my next shopping trip

Serendipity is right...the open spaces need to be filled with all sorts of climbing things and hideouts to make him feel ok with wondering out.
I might suggest wearing gloves when you work with the mesh. Also, this is probably common knowledge to you but it took me a couple of cable ties to cotton on...make sure the head of the cable tie faces out so your little one doesn’t form a hobby of eating them off...lol!
Please take pics as you go...I adore all things cages, layout and decor! I will post pictures tomorrow on Ragna’s cage setup of the first stages.
I was deeply disappointed when I saw that the knuff magazine rack from ikea isn’t stocked in the city I am...very irritating. Those kind of things would work well with large cages. You cut off the one side and lay it that way down to create a nifty platform. Will have to figure something else out.

I'll start meshing today or tomorrow! My dog is home so I can't take many photos while building as she loves getting in the middle of everything. The moment everything is set up (cage wise), I'll take pictures of how I go setting up the decoration, as that is way safer for the doggie.
Is it possible to use a metal magazine holder, knuff like but metal, or is it better to use just wood? I'm a bit scared of sharp edges near pets

Ohh, other news.
Tomate's name has been upgraded to "don Cocreta de Tomate" (Cocreta is Croqueta badly written, a type of Spanish aperitivo). He's a two month old long haired hamster.
