Plastic Totes for Cages
I want to make a bigger habitat for my Hamilton, since I'm starting to notice his increased activity, and I'm worried he needs more space to run around in other than his glass tank (roughly a 10 gallon tank). What are good dimensions to look at for making a storage bin cage? I want it to be tall so I can add some ramps and such. Please give me ideas!

Re: Plastic Totes for Cages
Syrians need a cage thats 80x50cm to 100x50cm so something that matches those dimensions. Please upgrade him from the 10 gallon asap though, that is far too small for any hamster.

Re: Plastic Totes for Cages
Yes, please try to meet the minimum suggested by aplacassei, but the bigger the better.
As for height, I don't know how good Syrians are at climbing, and ramps sound like fun to me, but please be careful not to build them too high as your hamster may fall off and injure himself. Ensure that he will always have a lot of soft bedding to land on and break any falls, don't put hard toys near the fall/ jump vicinity.

Re: Plastic Totes for Cages
He's in the tank because that's what I had on hand instead of a smaller wire cage. This is why I'm asking about plastic totes.

Re: Plastic Totes for Cages
hey there, i have my syrian in a 104-L (110 qt) bin cage because i had him in a 5-gal for around a month (absolutely horrid) because my mom got me the stuff for christmas and that's what the pet store advised her on getting (horrible, honestly, it took far too much convincing to get her to agree to let me upgrade him sheesh) but i upgraded him asap. he originally went into a 40-L bin cage i believe? then to his current 104-L one.
he has one of those chewnel things (he destroyed his first one but hasn't even touched this one). he also has plenty of chew toys (wooden, which he neglects) including whimzees which he absolutely loves. he's got two bendy bridges, a toiler paper roll (which i should probably replace now that i think about it), one of those mushroom-shaped chew things and he used to have a hanging chewtoy but i need to get him a new one.
