Default Which Glass Tanks?

What size glass tanks would be suitable for a single dwarf hamster? Someone told me 40 gallons is the bare minimum, so should I size up, or is 40 gallons enough space? What other sizes of tanks would you recommend?

40 gallons is the smallest you should go, but if you have the space and budget to get something bigger, that's always better! It's impossible to give them too big of an enclosure as long as you fill it with enrichment and don't just leave it bare, so the biggest size you can comfortably purchase and manage is the best option.

Opinion varies on this for dwarf hamsters on here. There is an informal minimum cage size in the US which is about the size of a 40 gallon breeder tank. I think this is a good size - 90cm x 45cm. I think 100cm x 50cm is a better school size - not sure how many gallons that would be - probably 75 gallon. A detolf is also a good option (google “hamster detolf” and click on “images”.). However in the Uk people tend to think 70cm by 40cm is a minimum size and there is quite a good Perspex cage that size which is easier to move about and interact with the hamster. Some of it depends on the personality of the hamster. If you have a very active hamster then bigger is good. If you have a very shy hamster then smaller might be fine and 70 x 40 usn’t A bad size anyway - and much better than a 20 gallon tank. It depends how you set it up . The Perspex cage is from Abbaseed. I’ll link it in a mo - have to go now.

It’s the one at the bottom of this page - Fop Tamburino. It has a good built in house/shelf which is space saving but the hay rack needs removing. Plenty of space for toys and a wheel and a good depth of substrate plus not so tall as tanks so top access is good.

Is a similar cage to the Fob Tamburino available in the UK? It would fit in my Ikea coffee table and i'm toying with the idea of getting a Robo. Saw a Robo up for adoption.

I would go for a 75 gallon if you can, minimum 40 gallon. Dwarf hams do need lots of room too. I personally disagree with the 70x40cm minimum as that’s even smaller than the already small 450square inch one in the US, and is below the previous RSPCA guideline. Most dwarfs will want much more room than that. Even shy hamsters that don’t like much interaction generally do well in larger cages with more enrichment.

Ria it’s similar to the duna multy or zoozone 1. Having owned both of them I just cannot recommend them as I don’t think they’re big enough. Robos are very active and do well in larger cages too despite being more nervous. A hamster heaven would offer more room, a 80x50cm cage is a much better size. There is a big difference in size between the two, height included.

I agree for a Robo. Our Robo is in an 80 x 50 cage and I would have preferred 100cm for him - they are very active! And will run and dig tunnels all over the place! Tha maxi Duna multy would be good though. I actually couldn’t get on with a glass tank top opening so moved our Robo to a narrow bar cage. The duna tanks are easier top access though. I had the Kerry terrarium which just wasn’t quite big enough.

Yes, i got to be realistic here and have concluded that i don't really have the necessary space to accommodate another hamster. Thanks for the info anyway.
