Question Pairing dwarfs

Hello, I was wondering how to keep dwarfs together? I know that you should have two of everything, but is there any way you can keep them from fighting? Like placement of the different accesories in the cage or something? (I'm not planning to keep two dwarfs any time soon, just wondering)

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately there's no way to really guarantee your paired dwarf hamsters would never fight. It's an extremely unnatural living situation for various species that just don't have the social drive that other animals such as guinea pigs or rats have, so more often than not they end up having some problem that makes it necessary for them to be split up anyways. To put things more into perspective, social interactions in the wild are for breeding purposes which obviously we don't want to be dealing with as pet owners since we'd have endless baby hamsters.

Considering how unnatural it would be for two dwarf hamsters to live together and all the potential negative responses(stress which leads to a lower immune system and potential illness, fighting, death, etc) I would strongly suggest just not doing it ever.

I agree with amity, I often have to question the ethics of keeping pairs together especially when it involves a smaller than required cage with a very basic setup in an attempt to keep them together. In fact I am yet to see any convincing evidence that a fully bonded pair are more likely to stay bonded in a medium sized basic setup than in a large and enriching setup, the idea of a forced bond is something that doesn’t sit well with me at all.

There are plenty of similar animals that actually require company such as gerbils & mice, so to me it makes very little sense trying to keep unsociable animals together. The reasons that they live in colonies in the wild do not apply to hamsters in captivity and on top of that they are unable to escape a dangerous situation in a cage of any size - best keep them alone.

And yet pet shops often advise pairs ...

I agree that singles are best with hamsters.

Good to hear that Swedish pet shops are more clued up than British ones. Just as a matter of interest. What kind of cages do they sell? Here in UK they still sell cages that shoud be made illegal and i don't understand why the RSPCA doesn't do anything about it.

Unfortunately the pet shops here only sell the duna fun mini and ones similar to it, and aslo the ferplast ones. None of them are suitable.

This one has some suitable ones though, it's online only.
