Ragna’s cage set up
This thread stems from the thread “Road to Ragna”
I am so so excited to post this pictures...finally! Im missing some more hideouts and Miller sprays and odds and ends that haven’t come yet but I am really excited to hear your encouragement and feedback on how I can adjust and improve on the set up.
I wanted to go tonight to get Ragna but want feedback first to ensure that all is good to go first.
Again, thank you so much to everyone on the forum for your advice, guidance and support.
It’s been amazing!

Re: Ragna’s cage set up
The last picture isn’t very clear. On the first layer I used pot plant holders as a wall and cut out the backs so that a Ragna could make a tunnel through them if he wanted to. I stacked them one front then back and so one.

Re: Ragna’s cage set up
woohoo exciting, I was sat here just literally wondering how you were getting on and hoping you would post pics.
Looks awesome.
Is the sand bath in the terracotta thing on the left? (yes it is you posted more photos since i wrote this)
Just three things I would keep an eye on
1.)is the plate thing on top of the terracotta pot part of it or just balanced? If balanced just make sure it is not going to fall off or get knocked. (I may be over cautious but i do worry about these things!) But i do love how you added the natural things in that plate. You are making me rethink my cage.
2.) When you turn bendy bridges on their side like that, make sure there are no big gaps for hamsters to potentially get their feet trapped/stuck in. I had a quick look but the wood pieces looked like they were close together on yours, sometimes they have gaps.
3.) just watch if your hammy chews on those zip ties. you may need to tie with something like sissal or jute.
Other than that, just go get your hammy already and then sit back and watch him settle in. You may need to move/tweak a few things after observing his habits.
SO EXCITING!!!!!!

Re: Ragna’s cage set up
I’m still waiting for the whimzees, coconut shells, hideouts - no space for those, sprays and those two bridges I do desperately needed but made another plan.
The bedding is 6.69 inches for most of the cage accept the sand bath and wheel area. I then used the boredom breaker mats to enclose the cat along the sides and only put more bedding in the corner. Is this enough burrowing?
Should I make a hole in the lid of the box? I want to place a log on top of the lid when it arrives so that the hole from the box lid isn’t exposed but it’s going to be hard to open the lid without removing everything.
I didn’t think about a food dish....any suggestions? I’m going to find a glass bowl to place on the pebbles in the corner where the water bottle lip is.
Is there enough cover for Ragna to move around confidently?

The sand bath is plastic...should I change it to terra-cotta when I can get it? We secured it as it did knock over when I bumped it.
Ok, will re secure the bridges and find some rope/string.

Re: Ragna’s cage set up
Plastic is ok - just keep an eye on it- luna's sandbath is a plastic ice cream tub (I want to replace it). she doesn't chew it - other hamsters may - same with the zip ties- don't replace yet - just keep an eye on it - if your hammy doesn't bother chewing them, nothing to worry about. don't forget a lot of hamsters have plastic wheels and never chew them.

Re: Ragna’s cage set up
luna only has about 6 inches to burrow in at the moment. I am working on something to build up the sides so i can give her loads more - so yes i think your 6.9 inches is fine. I know others will say no - but that is about the max you can get in a wired cage unless you build something up the sides.
