Really can’t wait to see what Ragna gets up to. Will keep an eye on his teeth. The cage has been moved to a quiet corner next to the fridge. We have checked that there is no heat radiating off it. We can’t set it up temporary because of where it is. We won’t be able to open the fridge so we are looking for a permanent set up. If Ragna shows signs of imitating Mike Tyson and trying to interact with the camera like a punch bag - it would swing if touched we will think of another way to view.

I’m so excited to see him busy at night. It’s been hard for me not being able to interact with him as I thought I would have been able to. He has made lovely tunnels in his nesting house which is great but he has got crafty now and isn’t keen to leave his tunnels besides sticking out his nose to sniff what I’m dangling above him.

Ragna’s safety and health is my number one focus so if he shows any signs of successfully nibbling the camera will remove it.

I’m actually sitting here laughing at myself...I thought from the beginning that the camera goes into the cage because you won’t see much through the bars...giggle...I even spoke to a wildlife ranger I know in South Africa to check that the position of the camera would be the best place to put it as far as Ragna paying attention to it. This ranger puts cameras out for lions, leopard and such so I thought it would be ok for a hamster...hahahaha...

Do you think it’s not a good idea to attempt to keep the camera in the cage? I honestly was in the frame of mind that Ragna will take a sniff and look but because it swings move on and the camera would become part of the furniture in the cage. Really giggling...you must all think I’m daft...hahaha.

If it swings and is a stretch for Ragna to reach, then I should think that he will have a go sniffing and then give up. It would be difficult for him to get his teeth sunk into it and it is that oval shape and awkward to chew. In the unlikely event he gets his teeth locked on, then he would probably end up swinging there and once he had let go he would be cured of all curiosity! Seriously, if he can't stretch up and reach it, all should be well. Just watch his first encounter to make sure all is well. Don't want him getting teeth sunk in and then being unable to let go and be left swinging. I cannot see that happening as the casing is bound to be too hard.

It may work to keep the camera inside the cage. You'll soon find out and the only way to find out is to try it.

Watch out Ragna, there's a spy in your home.

This post stems from the thread “Going German”

I’m so excited to be building Ragna’s new cage this afternoon - if all goes well we will be done tonight and then it’s a case of adding the balance of Fitch I had left and seeing if that and the bedding in his cage will be enough to fill the 50cm deep base. If not then we will have to wait till my new order of bedding arrives next week. Will attach pictures of his cage as we build...really excited.

So looking forward to introducing a Ragna to his 165cmx50cmx50cm cage setup.

Materials used:

3 x IKEA lack side tables - we will lay them upside down and connect them together
8 x wood boards to slot between the table legs to form the base
Wood to create the cage frame
Bendy chicken mesh for the frame

I was going to go with the detolf cage but I wanted the base to be deeper to allow for 50cm of bedding and wanted better ventilation using mesh instead of glass.

So excited! We have built the base...wow it’s deep...the bedding I ordered might not be enough but will add layers of hay and have the coconut zoomed block that I will soak and fill one quarter of the base. Will send pictures later. We busy on the frame at the moment.
