Post Living World Eco vs Ikea Detolf

Hiya!

I am looking for advice as to which cage I should buy; I have space for either. The large living world eco green habitat or the ikea detolf.

I have a 5 month old female Syrian who is obsessed with chewing the bars of her Barney cage, no matter how many chew toys and enrichment etc I put in (you name it, I've tried it). I have come to the conclusion that she should be housed in a bar-less cage.

These two are my top favourites and I was wondering if anyone has had either of these cages and could provide a bit of feedback or a comparison?

Alternatively, if anyone has a better tank style cage that may suit my needs (I live in the UK) I would really appreciate it.

Thank you in advance x

In terms of size the Ecohabitat is definitely the best option but for a female Syrian most people need to make minor adjustments such as glueing metal brackets to the wooden corners to prevent chewing but thats not expensive to do.

Another great option is the Ikea Linnmon cage, it involves a lot more DIY than the Detolf but its s beautiful cage and its really easy to customise the size. If I were to build one I go for 100x120cm using two 100x60 linnmon shelves put together as the base with the 120cm shelves as the sides.

The Detolf while nice looking is very narrow and short which makes building an enriching setup for a syrian very difficult

They are both great. Personally I would prefer a detolf - but some hamsters even chew the inner bars in those! You can get round that if it happens (they are thick bars so it's not that common) by wrapping sisal string round the detolf bars - that's a deterrant and also safe to chew. The detolf on top of kallax units is a good height and not too deep so I think more accessible in a way.

I think she may chew the wood corners on the eco habitat and I would find it a pain to put metal corner strips in. As it's much taller and access would be from the top, that would be something to think about in terms of interaction. Although the detolf is top access also, with it being longer and less deep heightwise, you can kind of come in at a better angle (if that makes sense!). I couldn't get on with top access at all when I had a tank style, but if it's bigger/longer (than the Kerry Terrarium I had) it would be easier.

So out of the two I would go with the detolf. But the safest bet for a chewer and the space may be the Linmon cage mentioned above.

I personally have the Detolf. I have a cambells dwarf though, and have never had a syrian in there. If your hammy likes chewing wood, I would go for the Detolf. If you're going to build a lid with mesh in the Detolf, he/she could chew that. The detolf is quite short, so the biggest wheel you could fit in there would probably be an 11". To do this you will have to remove a lot of the bedding or put most of it to one side.

Due to this I might have gone for the Eco habitat since it's bigger aswell, but I have no experience with that cage, so I don't know the cons.

If you're going to go with the detolf you'll need to look into how to build a raised lid. I had to move my girl into a Linnmon because she was chewing the flat mesh lid of the detolf incessantly. And it is narrow and not very deep.

I actually am having the same problem now with the male syrian I have in the detolf and am looking into a raised lid myself. I think it would be great cage for dwarfs but syrians, I'm coming to the realisation that it's got too many problems for me to really recommend it anymore.

I'd go Linnmon (or other IKEA hack), Eco Green, Detolf in order of preference.

Thank you!

Having had a look a the Linnmon cage, I think it would suit her much better!

No corners to chew and will still be dark because of the 3 wooden sides.

Alpacassei, thank you for the great idea

I'll treat it as my summer project!

Thank you again for all your responses and help, it has been so useful.

xx
