Default DIY homemade cage attempt

Hi, I had my dwarf hamster on a Ferplast Hamsterville Hamster Wooden Cage, 60 x 34 x 49 cm.

So I made this cage for him, each square measures 30x30cm of floor.

Is this amount of floorspace appropriate? I often free him in the floor of my room for about one hour.

I own another dwarf that is on a Large Living World Green Eco Habitat.

No, that isn’t suitable. I’d say that it’s less suitable than the original cage as there is no room to properly move around given the size of each area - the floor space needs to be unbroken instead. Nice idea incorporating it into a shelf but if you were to do that it would need to be something like a converted ikea kallax. Are you able to get something else?

Even if it was to count as one space 90x30cm is still definitely on the small side so it would be good to aim for over 4-5000 square cm of floor area instead.

I've seen photos of your Living Eco Habitat set up and its fabulous....but what were you thinking with this creation?

A hamster is not an ornament you can put on display in compartments with back lighting.

How could the hamster run around or build tunnels without enough continuous floor space?

Your hamster does need continuous floorspace of at least 70cm by 40cm floor area in one unit. Even then add on sections often don't work well for them.

I agree the Hamsterville is the better option, unless you can hack the unit a bit more and make one larger area Even then, ventilation is a very important aspect.

Ummmm...how does the wheel turn properly without rubbing the sides? You have a cat lying on the chair in front of your set up and the glass doesn’t go all the way to the top. If I’m to be reprimanded by the moderators of this forum I will take that reprimand and apologize but is this some kind of joke? What happens if that cat eats your hamster? Do you have any idea how quickly a cat can eat it’s prey. Lighting behind the areas? I’m really distressed by this thread. You have been a member here since March...your natural look and items placed in your areas are fantastic so you must have some knowledge of what items are good for a hamster. Did you not check first what floor space is needed? The effort you put into it indicates a lot of thought went into it...the happiness of your hamster isn’t in how lovely it can be arranged on a shelf but the amount of space it has to be its natural self...a hamster...not an ornament.

Thanks for your feedback. I thought that the 30x30 x 3 of would be better than the regular cage I had. And the division in the left is very deep and he has already made a tunnel and a nest where he sleeps.

You can see the "cage" better here:

And this is where he was before:

And this is where my OTHER dwarf is:

About the lighting, it is red so I can observe him without disturbing him. (I red that red is invisible to them)

Oh I forgot to say that the cat is fine with the hamster, he can't reach him, at all, it is impossible and they will never be together. But the hamster in his old cage used to run towards the cat and stay there near him just staring at eachother, he doesn't seem scared or disturbed by him.

Yes, the cage for your other hamster is fine but it would be better to add deep bedding. The one with 3 compartments does quite urgently need changing and the old cage isn’t ideal either, are you able to get something else more similar to the eco habitat.

I don't understand why you would have such a great sized cage for one hamster and not the other. You must have done your research and know that hamsters need unbroken floor space. Also, from your video it looks like there is a gap at the back of the partition on the left, is your hamster going to be able to escape thru there/chew it's way out? I'm not sure why you think a cat can't get into that set up, when it has open partitions?
As far as I can see your hamster squeezes underneath the wheel to get to the front of it? So not very accessible.
I really hope you rethink what you are doing for the sake of your hamster.

I didn't know about the "unbroken continuos floor space thing". So if I have a lot of wood castles and stutf like in the other setup I should subtract that space from the total area?

I was new to having hamsters, I thought I could have 2 dwarfs inside that big cage. Then I was told I couldn't and to make it even worse, they were wrongly sexed and I have a boy and girl..

I dont have space for another big cage like that one. And since the dwarf there barely runs around and just moves between his nest, wheel and food bowl, I feels like it's too much for him.

I could drill another hole and give him another 30x30 but it won't be unbroken space.. I mean.. He just has to go through the little "door" which he does nicely. Or I could put him in the old cage.

Thanks for the feedback again
