Default Plants for a hamster cage.

Hi all!

I know that Parsley, clover, Daisy, Chamomile, Mint, Spider plant and Grass are ideal. But i was wondering if i sprouted some Millet and let it grow, would that be okay for a hamster cage?

Any other plants okay for hamsters? I want to make a little garden for Winston. So far i have a little Spider plant.

Thanks!

Lots of german cage set ups include sprouted millet growing in the cage, I really cautious about plants growing in cages due to the moisture build up in the cage, that does depend to some extent on the type of cage though, also don't forget need quite a lot of light to grow well which is what hams don't tend to like too much!

Hi Winnie - I have seen questions like this before, apart from any plants that might be toxic (not sure about the spider plant) I think the problem is giving too much access to fresh foods. So it might be something that you gave Winston access to occasionally for short periods of time.

I agree with cypher's comments too.

I'm not an expert though, so others might be better informed. It's a lovely idea though for additional enrichment for Winston.

Thanks both for your comments

Winston is in a 4ft glass tank with two well ventilated lids. half of the cage is in light, but not direct. I've seen spider plants in the cages before (if you search natural cage designs on google you'll find them) I don't think they eat spider plants though (but they're safe) and Winston doesn't like Millet, so that's why i wanted to use it for a plant. I've read that spider plant seeds aren't safe, but just to remove them if they develop. It's pretty easy to know when they're going to seed too so im sure it'll be okay.

Im testing out both the spider plant (which was a baby from my bedroom spider plant) and Millet seeds in damp megazorb bedding (not in his cage) to see if it grows in it. I have looked up on the hamsters natural habitat, and certain places where they would live have grassy areas, so i think a little moisture is okay, but to be safe i'll water them outside his cage and leave them out for a couple hours or so to let the plant suck up as much as it can. I'd do this during the day when he's sleeping so he doesn't stress.

I think it would look lovely and that Winston would enjoy it

I know this thread is a while ago but it made me laugh. Last night I moved Mimi into her new detolf. Her first action was to bite the whole spider plant off at the base and drag it into her house!!!

I’ve removed all the leaves from her stash so she doesn’t binge on it!
Little hooligan...!!

Exclamation Re: Plants for a hamster cage.

I’m not 100% sure about Millet, but all the others are fine.

Before you put in the cage, see how your hamster reacts. If he nibbles it a bit but doesn’t attack it, you should be alright.

If you are growing herbs, thyme, mint e.c.t. Make sure you trim it regularly because the smell, can get overpowering.

Also, Spider plant seeds and flowers are highly toxic, so make sure you cut any runners that start growing.

Hope this helps

I'm definitely going to grow the spider plants a bit bigger before re-introducing them to Mimi (the Destroyer..!)!!

Might try herbs. she's still settling into her new house so last night she went CRAZY and caused havoc!!
