I've done it, and I spent like 10 Euro on building a running platform, that I personally think looks really nice and is natural, all while being inexpensive. It also depends on prioritizing. Many hamsters don't enjoy things like sputniks because hamsters aren't climbing animals, can fall easily and prefer making nests close to ground - or in the ground Besides, they're plastic. Instead, you can order a cork tunnel from zooplus that are really big, natural, and will make the cage look 100 times better. Sure, they cost a bit more than a sputnik, but it's a lot more natural & really nice. Plus, for the fact that it takes up so much space, it replaces the need for two houses (and it's not thatt much more expensive). I know a girl who saved 3 Euro every week, and after a few months, bought a ton of new, natural items, like cork, grape vine etc. I guess what I'm trying to say is, it's the way you look at it and get inspired by it, rather than immediately look down on it. There are always cheep alternatives, you just need to look for them.

That being said, I do get where you come from
It's not the cage decorations and stuff I dislike here in Germany. I do DIY stuff all the time and am planning a diy cage right now. What bothers me is that we don't have any variety in substrates. We only have wood chippings or wooden cat litter pellets. No paper based substrates, no hemp bedding. Except online of course but for way more money than in other countries because I have to import it. I've had a few hamsters that seemed to be allergic to the wood based substrate, but I can't do anything about it except using pellets which are not really an amazing alternative.

Oh, that makes sense! But we do have hemp bedding, have you checked fressnapf or zooplus? I currently use it for my long haired Syrian, but hemp bedding is also wood based, and I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a long haired male syrian because the tunnel systems collapse quickly in it I have to use it because everything else gets tangled in his fur, but you'd really have to press down a lot and add a lot of hay to make the tunnels hold somewhat.

Zooplus sells paper based bedding (or the used to, not sure about now) but it is quite expensive, you're right
But is there a specific reason you want to change beddings? Is your current hamster allergic to wooden bedding? And are you sure it's not just that the bedding is too dusty? Many hamsters get really irritated by dusty bedding, and sadly a lot of beddings are dusty

Have a lovely day!

My current hamster isn't allergic to the substrate but I am It really doesn't bother me from day to day but when I'm changing out his bedding, well. It gets interesting! So that's one of the reasons I'd like to switch it up once in a while.

Whisky is a long haired male syrian but so far we only had two substrate incidents where we had to cut his skirt a little

I don't know why, but the next Fressnapf is very far away and I've never seen a Zooplus in my life here in Germany! Maybe I'll look into it!

As for enrichment, I'm kind of really fed up by my current cage with the diagonal side walls because I can't really fit a bigger house and the 13 inch wheel and the toys I want in there!
So I have two weeks off of work now and I'm doing a DIY cage! I'm planning on a cage that's 115cm by 60cm which gives me 6.900 square centimetres to work with!
Whiskey seems to be quite the runner instead of a digger so I'm happy to provide him with more floor space for running naturally without his wheel. And then I can fit a big house with a litter tray finally!

Sounds great! I have problems with bedding as well - I could just about cope with wood shavings, but was allergic to the hemp. Paper bedding suits me and our hamster just fine. It's a shame it isn't easily available in Germany. I do know Rat rations in the Uk ships to most countries and they sell paper bedding and softacard.
