As for your question regarding the bedding. Chipsi is seen as perfectly safe too, and we rarely use paper based bedding becuase it's so expensive, and considering the minimum cage size & bedding hight, it would be really, really expensive. It's also not easy to get your hands on. I'm not sure why we don't worry about it much to be honest, though I'm almost positive they are kiln dried. Otherwise noone would use them, much like we don't use houses made of softwood (like those wooded houses you can buy from trixie or other companies).
Hope this helped!

I admire Germany's hamster care policies so much, I wish they were the same in the UK.
I would go plastic free if I could but I do sadly have limitations to my housing; I've set up a natural themed hamster home with wood shaving bedding (and Kaytee C&C for nesting material) with wooden platforms, a half cork log and a vine wood log too. The only plastic elements are the wheel (I had one spare) and the bin cage itself, (Which is 496 square inch in floor space) it's the biggest I could find that was also movable as I bring my hamsters down from my room in the summer.
I'll be able to post a picture soon!
Thank you so much for your help, it's put my mind at ease
