Default Are stones ok?

I walked along Findhorn beach yesterday and picked up some pretty, large pebble stones. It is not a polluted area and i'd like to use some as a step in my hamster's cage.
Is that ok to use? I'd give them a good wash of course to remove any salt water residue. If anyone knows please let me know. Thanks.

A member called mangoandmimi had stones in her cage layout. She kindly sent me pictures of her cage and there were smooth pebbles in the cage. I saw something on YouTube about pebbles and the lady said she used soap to clean it with. I’ve also seen pebbles in the natural cages on Pinterest that have copied the German layout.

Thanks Schwartzie, that's great and will give my hamster something new to sniff at. There's so much scope with a natural lay out.

Ria P, I put stones in my Luna's cage I soaked them in soapy dish water for an hour i think, then i soaked them in water and vinegar and then i boiled them (with my fingers x'd they didn't explode- some can, mine didn't) then one last go over with vinegar i think. I was just so paranoid of making sure i killed any bacteria or living microscopic insects Call me overkill, but i did want to pass anything onto my precious Luna, I would never have been able to forgive myself.

Thanks Luna, never thought of boiling the stones but will give them a good srub with soap and hot water. I'm not that concerned about bacteria because Henry is exposed to them when free roaming so should have built up some kind of resistance, i hope.
I was more worried about hamsters gnawing on stones and damaging their teeth but can't see my Henry doing that.

They looked nice on the beach but look like potatoes when dry. I put them down as a step when Henry hops off the house for a different texture under his paws.

The pebble looks fab!! I'm copying you and putting pebbles in my cage. If you have more than one pebble scattered and they overlap or lie a bit over each other is that dangerous for a hamster getting a leg or paw stuck? Was thinking of dedicating a corner to pebbles and having my grass growing at the back with the pebbles hiding the plant holder. Luna G, please send a pic of Luna's pebbles.
