Play sand for hammy questions
Hi guys, I just adopted a baby robo around 6 weeks old yesterday and bought some children's play sand for her sand bath. The packet says that it's graded and sanitized so I just put it straight into a container for the hammy. I later realised that it was actually damp. I just didn't notice that at the start because it wasn't wet to the touch. I just thought that they were some clumps because it hasn't been messed around in .🤦*♀️ I live in Ireland where the climate is quite wet so I can't air dry them outside, and our oven is broken so I can't oven bake either. Is there any other method to deal with the damp sand issue?? It was also quite a big bag so I dumped most of the bag in a storage box so I'm wondering if the damp sand in there could get moldy/attract mites/bugs because I doubt I could dry such a big quantity of sand, especially without an oven. Please help. My baby deserves a sand to bathe and dig in!

Re: Play sand for hammy questions
Congrats on adopting a hamster!
One of my hamster books suggests microwaving compost before use so i guess the same could be done with sand? I haven't tried it because i use the Tiny Friends sand from the pet shop. Maybe a hair dryer would dry out the sand? I don't know but i wouldn't have thought that play sand goes mouldy because it gets wet in a kiddies sand pit.

I think using a hair dryer would blow the sand everywhere but you're probably right about the moldy thing, I dont know why I didn't think of that 😂 I'll try microwaving it

Re: Play sand for hammy questions
spread it out on a baking tray and leave in the sun for a few hours and it should soon dry out

Thank you for the reply. It actually air dried much faster than I thought despite the sun not being out at the time.
