repti-sand sand baths?
i’ve heard lots of people recommending using zoo-med reptisand for hamster sand baths. i have a male syrian. i have heard a couple people saying it’s not safe though? i just want to be sure because while i could use children’s play sand, we don’t have space in our apartment for a giant bag of it. could some of you who have used it let me know how their syrians have liked it?

Re: repti-sand sand baths?
Repti-sand is definitely not safe. Even if someone has used it and not had anything bad happen, I wouldn't consider that confirmation of safety by any means and would avoid it 100% instead as you'd be taking a massive chance that could seriously harm your hamster.
One option for storing play sand instead of resorting to unsafe reptile sands would be breaking the big bag down to smaller and more manageable containers, this way it doesn't all have to stay in the same spot.

Re: repti-sand sand baths?
The biggest issue with repti-sand is that most bags have calcium added, which is a no-go for hammies. If you’re able to find a bag without calcium that would be fine, but I haven’t been able to find any at my pet stores (and the play sand is really much cheaper anyways)

Re: repti-sand sand baths?
thank you both very much! i’ll definitely avoid the reptisand. next time i get the chance i’ll go to a hardware store to get some. do you think it is necessary? i’ve heard of some syrians not caring much for it.

Re: repti-sand sand baths?
I would consider having it available to be necessary, as even if your Syrian doesn't bathe in it it's always better to give them the choice to use it or not use it. Plus they'll often at least use sand as litter anyways!
