He has a baking tin full of sand outside his house and digs in it but never pees in the sand, he uses the toilets for that. He doesn't roll around the sand but rubs his back in it sometimes.
Thing is, like humans every hamster has his or her own personality and until you actually have a resident hamster you won't know their likes and dislikes. Hamsters are strong willed little animals who very much have their own minds and don't always agree to what us humans think they ought to like or need.
You'll find out soon. This forum really helps to talk all things hamster while you wait for things to arrive. I am currently 500 miles away from my own hamster and really miss him but at least i can still talk about him here. People who don't know me well give me funny looks when i chat about Henry like he's a person and then find out that he's a hamster!
Thanks for the tips...I will place something small in the house and see if the hamster uses it. Will still keep my DIY plant holder sand bath I made.

I’ve also had an idea...was pondering today...I’m very into the natural theme so as much of logs/wood as possible is where I’m going with my cage. This may be a crazy idea but I think I am going to try it. I’m going to order another log like this one:

https://saudi.desertcart.com/products/61014688

My hubby and I are then going to attach a mini hinge to it and submerge the one side as it’s tall...13cm. I can then open it to spot clean. The length is also shorter so won’t take up space.

What do you think?

Or would this one be better?

https://saudi.desertcart.com/product...26?inventory=0

I don’t know which would be better. They are very similar in measurements.

It's very nice. However Syrians will choose where to nest and it may not always be in what you've provided! Generally they will choose something that mimics a burrow - dark inside with enough space to build a good cosy nest. I once provided a nice house which was ignored - hamster decided it wasn't big enough or dark enough. Provided a bigger one with a bendy bridge tunnel over the door and he moved straight in.

Personally I think the desert log thing is a great floor toy in a cage (providing that hole is big enough - needs to be at least 6cm diameter) but I would stick with a conventional house for nesting.

Thanks! I was looking at crates from IKEA when I popped into the local shop and found a shoebox. I’ve cut an entrance of 8cm or so. I’ve cut a rectangle on the bottom if the hamster wants to dig and placed a stainless steal bowl for a toilet for now.

Do I fill the nest side with substrate or does the tissue I provide out of the house for it to pull in be enough for a nest? I was planning on digging a very shallow hole where Ive cut the rectangle so there is depth to nest. I have included pictures below.

The box is 27cmx19cmx10cm. Is that big enough?

It would be better to cut the whole base out of the box and have it sat on top of substrate. So your hammy can bury hoards under the nest. And just get things how they like inside. If you put a big pile of torn up strips of plain white toilet paper out in the cage they like to take it to the nest themselves - sort of forage for it and pouch it even and take it to the house ti build the nest. They might use some of the substrate as well.

In fact I have seen hamsters take all the nesting material out of a house (if the owner has put it inside) and then take it all back in again in their usb way! Clearly humans can’t do nests right . So better to have the nesting material in the cage for foraging.

Ok great, thanks so much. Will make the hole bigger. Lol, I really can’t wait to see what my hamster is going to do! Thanks again for your advice😀😀

I could be totally wrong here but going by what my own hamster does a round dish may not work as a toilet.
My hamster pees in the corner and i mean right into the corner. He sniffs, does a turn, reverses his butt into position, lifts his tail and pees as far into the corner as possible. I'd look for a corner dish or even a square one.

Ok thanks so much! Im umming about what to get. I'm going big on the natural look and the only corner toilets are plastic in bright colours. I know hamsters wouldn't care but it would stick out like a sore thumb...hahahaha!! Will probably have to go with one of the corner ones and ignore the colour.

I think Trixie makes a brown plastic corner toilet that wouldn't look too bad in a natural setting. If you knew someone who does pottery you could get one made but it would need to be glazed.
My hamster doesn't like plastic and used a small clay pot that was lying on its side as a toilet before i got the rodipet ceramic ones. Unglazed clay pots start to smell after a while though.
