Default Double storey furniture layout

Hi everyone,

I’m busy shopping online for all things hamsters and have found an online website that I can get Trixie products and more. I’m really sad though that Rodipet is out of the question - love their products!

I really wanted to buy the Barney cage but to ship it this side your looking at an astronomical amount. Im going with two samla bins. It’s slowly dawning in me that it’s going to be quite tricky furnishing both levels without duplicating. I was thinking of having a house on the ground floor with a platform and food on top. I will make sure that I have a corner house on the platform. I will also have a corner sand corner on the bottom floor.

So on the ground floor I’m looking at the following:

1. Trixie corner toilet using chinchilla sand - I’ve decided to use that over children’s play sand as I can’t bake it and it’s very expensive and colored. The more natural colors come in bulk for sandpits.
2. Trixie Leif Labyrinth house - does anyone have any feedback on this house or any better suggestions
3. Trixie hamster bridge to cover entrance of house
4. Platform with food and hay - Trixie roof and platform
5. Trixie coconut to hang next to platform - will this be big enough?
6. Pot of cat grass on platform
7. Trixie climbing wall against platform

Top floor:

1. Nite angel wooden mouse tunnel - are the cut out holes big enough for a Syrian?
2. Trixie suspension bridge - looks like so much fun
3. Trixie water bottle - attached to side
4. Trixie roof and platform
5. Niteangel suspension bridge against platform
6. Trixie 28cm wheel - attaches to side
7. Rosewood boredom shack on platform in corner - is this big enough for a Syrian?

For toys and extras I’m getting:

1. Fitch paper bedding - I’ve decided to give it a try
2. Mayuan apple sticks treats
3. Rosewood 3D pack of 5 nibble stir
4. Rosewood naturals fun balls
5. Rosewood naturals playground
6. Purebites freeze chicken cat treats to substitute for protein level in local hamster food

I’m going to alternate the toys and not have them all in.

Is it possible to be able to split my bins like this to encourage my hamster to use both? I’ve put the food with the house as you all mention in your threads how they take their food into their nests. I placed the water and wheel in the top bin to encourage the hamster to go searching for water then using the wheel. I know that hamsters choose their habitat and my hamster may burrow and make its home in the top floor or wherever. I’m just trying to order a good foundation to start with. It takes 2 to 3 weeks delivery so don’t want to order in bits. I’d rather do on order in bulk and then order little things I want to add as I go along.

How thick is your substrate. I’ve been looking at pictures of cages on the forum but it’s hard to tell. I’m going to use tissue for bedding and leave it out for the hamster to drag where it wants to. I’m also going to leave hay scattered in both levels. I’ve been a horse person my whole life and bedding in stables works that the bedding is more along the sides sloping up against the walls. Is this also applied with hamsters? I’m seeing 6 inches and 8 inches being mentioned. Is this the general depth?

Your advise and views would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Wow, this is going to be one lucky hamster. I can't reply to everything, but hope this helps a bit.
I have the Trixie Leif Labyrinth house and I love it. Luna sleeps in one partition, and food storage in another, then she burrows down underneath it all to go to toilet, which makes spot cleaning so easy, just lift the house up when she's not in it.

The things i'm not sure about are hay? I've never scattered hay in Luna's cage, this may just be something I don't know about. She does have houses made out of hay and a maze which she nibbles on.

It's hard to imagine what your set up will be like when finished, but maybe the water needs to be a little nearer where your hamster ends up sleeping.

When I set up a new layout in the cage I always watch Luna to see if I need to move things a round a bit, more often that not I end up tweeking things around.

I think the mouse tunnel may be too small for a syrian, especially if the one you get ends up being on the larger side.

I know people do use them but I don't like suspension/hanging/rope bridge things, hamsters are not as agile as mice/rats because they don't have the longer tail that helps balance, hamsters can fall and hurt themselves more easily, I would prefer to use the other type of bridge you mention https://www.amazon.com/Niteangel-Sus.../dp/B016GKF250

You may also want to get something a bit bigger for the sand pit, I started off using one of the toilet corner things, but it wasn't really large enough.

I think you are going to be so excited when this all arrives and you get to set it up.

A good tip on amazon when you are not sure about sizes is look in the comments or at photos, sometimes an item may be ok for smaller syrians, but not for larger syrians, or they will be ok for smaller species of hamster

Great news on the house...will keep that in the cart. Will look at getting a bigger sand pit. You said that Luna goes to toilet under her house. What does she do in the sand pit? I’m going to leave the Trixie suspension bridge as what you says makes sense.

I’m very excited to push proceed to check out once I’m sure I’m on the right track. Exciting times. I’m going to be bursting when I go to the pet shop to get my hamster eventually...yay!

Thanks for the info. Will research about hay...I’m not sure either.

I will move the water to the bottom floor. Do you think that the hamster will actually go up to the top floor? I’m worried that it won’t then doesn’t use its wheel and exercises. Guess time will tell and as you said I will have to adjust once the hamster has settled.

I think hamsters are inquisitive little things and escape artists given the chance, I am pretty confident your hamster will be exploring all that they can. I am sure they will find the wheel and use it.

Luna has a bath in the sand pit - that's it's main use, some hamsters use it as a toilet area, just because that's what they think it is for (i think!)

I use a bit of Timothy hay. My hamster has a basket with hay on top of his house (secured to the bars) and he likes to climb into it and sit in it. I hide peanuts in the hay for him

I think that hamsters like levels and mine likes to sit on the degus shelves i've put up at different heights. It almost looks like he sits up on a shelf to think like here.

Thanks so much for sending the picture. I’m going to look at the degus shelf as well. I will also place the hay in the coconut house I’m hanging up. I have no doubt I will end up moving things but at least I have an idea so as don’t buy unnecessary items or buy the wrong things.

Double storey has now become single storey. I popped into the petshop yesterday in the hope of seeing something I didn't pick up before because of my lack of knowledge on the topic of hamsters - I've still got very far to go. Thank you to everyone on the forum who has advised me patiently so far on my journey of researching before getting my hamster. I came home with a cage....eeeeekkk...my first item I've bought for my hamster! I spotted the cage on the floor. It's a rabbit cage and 100cmx50cm with the plastic rim being 17cm(6.69 inches) deep. If I measure it from the wire it's those measurements but if I measure the bottom it's 92cmx47cm. It flares out if you know what I mean. The bars are not going to be small enough so will do a DIY and and place mesh over the bars.

I wanted to attached a picture but haven't worked out how to yet.
