Unhappy Help with hamster playpen!

Hi all,
I recently bought some storage cubes on eBay to turn into a playpen for my hamster because I saw it on YouTube - it looked like a really good idea and I’ve seen loads of bad reviews for the wire playpens, so I thought this would be the best option (I can’t let her free roam because I rent the house I live in so I can’t fully hansterproof it).
I put her in the pen and straight away she chewed through the plastic 😩it is HUGE (I made it massive - almost the same size as my living room) so I can’t see why she feels the need to escape I’m now on the lookout for either a) a solution from anyone else who has used storage cubes as a playpen or b) a playpen recommendation which is chew proof because she will literally chew anything and everything (except the 20 chew toys I bought for her&#128579
Thank you!!

Hi, I rent too, in the summer I can use the conservatory but in winter it's too cold so i had to come up with a new idea. I tried many things, the wire run didn't work, i just did a video about it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7hbGM2l0w0 but you could get one and turn it upside down.I also used a big box, which Luna would eventually chew thru, so in the end I bought this https://www.argos.co.uk/product/7904044 and then sometimes i block off a certain space with a collapsed box at the end of my bedroom, but Luna will eventually chew thru that too, but I wouldn't leave her on her own when I get her out. I'v basically just given you a sneak preview of what my run idea series is going to be on Luna's Youtube channel for the next few weeks. Hamsters just like to escape and chew thru things, it's just their way, no matter how big you make a run for them, I am sure they will try to find a way to escape

I do have a box for her but she tries to escape constantly! She’s just an escape artist haha. Thank you for your suggestions! I do supervise her but she gets out in like 2 minutes and she doesn’t let go of the run when she’s chewing it so it’s hard to get her to stop! I’ll keep an eye on your channel! Thank you

The corner holes are tempting for a hamster to chew like a lot of openings. Would a metal washer on each side work. It would need to totally cover the hole.

Hmmm maybe, I don’t know how I would attach the washers though, Any suggestions? I’m so bad at DIY was thinking perhaps some large rocks in front of the holes or maybe some thick tape but I don’t want her to chew tape and get it stuck in her mouth :/

I've seen people suggest thick tape as well. The idea isn't really to use the tape as a barrier, it's so they don't notice there is a gap to get a proper hole started I think. It's hiding the weak spot. Washers might work if you have one on either side of the hole, and a bolt holding them together but in my experience they're not that cheap if you want to block every chewable corner.

The best playpen I've used is plain replaceable cardboard boxes. You know they're gonna get chewed anyway so you don't worry so much. You could line the playpen with cardboard you don't care about as like a first line of defense against her teeth?

A bath can be a good play area if you have one.
