Re: Best substrate for burrowing in the UK?
Is it for a Syrian or a dwarf hamster? I don't use an actual sand bath for a syrian, just a corner litter tray with sand in - neither of our syrians have been bothered about sand baths. For dwarf hamsters, most people feel they need and enjoy a sand bath/dish of sand and may also use it as a toilet as well.
For a toilet litter tray, I use these
Not too big, not too small and it's open at the top so they can get in and out easily. Big enough to pee in the very back corner (so neat of them!) and sit in the front for a wash. It also fits in the corner of a cage. Syrians tend to choose a corner of the cage for a toilet - so wait and see where the hamster chooses, spot clean the pee and add a bit more substrate to replace, and put the litter tray there, with the sand in and a tiny bit of pee'd on substrate on top the first time so they know it's still their pee corner. If you put it anywhere else they will ignore it

I am also not good at converting kg to litres lol. But for comparison the 10kg bag of Fitch would probably easily fill three 100cm cages to about 6" deep. Whereas the biggest bag of Kaytee I doubt would fill a single 100cm cage to 6" deep.

I'm getting a Syrian so thank you for clarifying. I've added that toilet to my cart. I'm loving the Trixie products and my cart is mostly full of them. I've also decided to get the package where you can buy two bags of 4kg Fitch bedding and test it out. I'm going to leave Kaytee comfy and clean for now and go with Fitch.
I was wondering about the depth of bedding. Does the substrate need to be deep all round or just the house and corners? Should I start a new thread asking about that and how to divide up hamsters habitats into two Samla bins.

I'm also going with the chinchilla sand. There is so much debate about using chinchilla sand and children's sand. Some go with it and others not. I can't be baking sand and it's very expensive where I am. Quite comical when I live in the middle of the desert. I made sure I chose sand and not dust.

Re: Best substrate for burrowing in the UK?
Seeking math boffs....
After lots of pondering, asking and thinking I went from wanting to order Kaytee soft and cozy to Fitch because you can get more for your money out of Fitch. While I was going through the online shop I came across megazorb and is well priced. I'm really for the tunneling so want that for my future hamster. It will also work well with my natural design I'm going with for my cage setup. I'm wanting to buy 85L...
Will it be enough if I fill a 100cmx50cm 3/4 full with it being 7.5inches deep and 1/3 2 inches deep? I'm going to do two platforms of megazorb with the 1/3 platform under the hamsters house. I just want to make sure I will have enough.
I will probably try and sulk if it's not enough because each shipping order takes two to three weeks hence me ensuring I have all the items I need before getting the hamster.

Re: Best substrate for burrowing in the UK?
I use megazorb and i have the savic plaza which is 100cm x 50 cm - i fill it to the top of the base which is 6 inches, and i also have a tower full of it, it lasts me 2-3 cleanouts, possibly more..as i don't clean out the whole cage everytime. Hope that helps.

Sorry to jump on an old thread but thought there’s no point creating a new one for the same thing!
LunaTheHamster1, do you still use the megazorb? Will it hold for burrows ok? I’m so confused what substrate to get for our Syrian 🤷🏻*♀️

It does get confusing
My hamsters have a dig about in it and make a tunnel down and underneath their hides, it holds well enough for that.
Yes I do still get it, at the moment I am mixing it with aubiose and I have just tried some kaytee clean and cosy.
I think out of everything I have tried megazorb works out at the best value.
Sometimes it's just a case of trying different substrates till you find the one that is right for you, budget wise and hamster wise.
