Default Eating hemp bedding?

Hi all,

I decided to give hemp bedding a go to give my Syrian a new substrate to try. I bought the hugro brand from zooplus (quite small shavings that aren't very sharp or dusty), but as soon as I put a handful in to see what she thought she immediately started to eat it! Not just stuffing in cheeks either, properly chewing! I'm hoping it's safe for her to eat although I don't think she's consumed much, but I would like to put the rest in her cage ideally. I've read it's safe for mice to eat, but what about hammies?

Thanks!

I'm sure it's fine -she's probably just testing it out. Because you put a little bit in she probably thought it might be food. If the cage was full of it I doubt she'd bother.

Thank you - I'll fill half the cage with it tomorrow and if she continues to think it's tasty I'll remove it! On the upside neither me or her seem allergic to it which is what I was initially worried about, fingers crossed she'll realise it's not food!!

When you put the bedding in, scatter some food on top and she'll be more interested in that Is your hamster very young? They will try anything to see if it's edible. Our last hamster tried eating potty litter but spat it out again thankfully (it's not good stuff to eat which is why I use Chinchilla sand instead now!) Our Syrian pouches sand! Well I think he does because he manages to transport it to the other end of the cage underground!

I'll give that a try! She's around 1 year old now so not a baby, but she is cage aggressive so I'm thinking that may be contributing to why she thinks it's something she has to immediately investigate! Haha I love how they take it upon themselves to rearrange everything, can just imagine them looking at something and thinking 'hmmm that's not a good spot, will move it over here. Silly humans!'. I'm planning on filling a third with the new bedding tonight so hopefully she's not a hemp eating monster or I will have to confiscate it!!!
