Is It better to get a Male or Female Hamster?
Hi guys! I’ve got a DIY two story cage set up for two hamsters, each cage is also two story’s, so imagine 4 story’s split into two separate cages,
I’ve got Igor my Male dwarf in the bottom cage and I’m looking to adopt for the top cage,
I’m just unsure if there’s a better gender to have living above my current Male, will another Male make them try to get to each other to fight?
And would a female make Igor try to get to her to mate?
What do you think??

Re: Is It better to get a Male or Female Hamster?
Hello! your cage sounds super cool!
And I was just wondering also, how do you think a male would feel smelling the female all the time and them one of them is in heat and the male gets rowdy bc they're in separate cages and he can't do anything about it even tho he knows theres a female above him??
If you plan on getting two genders I'd maybe suggest you separate them so they won't smell too much of eachother
If they're both the same genders I'd imagine they'd chatter to eachother but I think thats better than having one rowdy in-heat hammy

Re: Is It better to get a Male or Female Hamster?
Plenty of people keep mixed gendered hams. I suppose it's like any species and how they react is going to be individual. I just got a male and my female Syrian has started squeaking at him when she's in heat but he kinda just looks a bit confused and keeps trundling about doing his own thing. He's a bit older tho so maybe his lady chasing days are just behind him lol and she was rowdy as heck in heat before he got here so not much change there. She knew he was in the house when he was in the other room tho so if they're next to eachother or not they'll still smell eachother.
I don't think another male would bother him, they'd naturally encounter each others territory in the wild so he won't necessarily know the other male he smells is right next door.
Either way I don't think it would do any harm.

Re: Is It better to get a Male or Female Hamster?
I’ve got three male and three female Chinese (as well as a male Winter White and a male Roborovski) living in close proximity to each other and I’ve never really had any problems as I think they’re used to it. Occasionally one of the girls, Charlotte might show a bit of curiosity towards one of the boys if I’ve got one of them out but that’s all it is. They seem to ignore her and she goes back to doing whatever it was she was doing.
