Lightbulb Substrate megathread?

I'm trying to get organised for building Wonder's new Linnmon cage and would appreciate some advice on substrate.

I have previously always used Fitch. Wonder seems to get on fine with it but rarely burrows in it (except when she is in her travel case!)
And it's gone up in price.

Is there a substrate megathread I'm missing? I'd love to hear people's opinions about the different types of substrate (available in the UK)

I'm considering having different sections with different types of substrate. Do we think that's a good idea?
Maybe a digging tower? What substrate would be best in that?

Thanks in advance HC!

I recently switched to Kaytee Clean & Cozy and my hams love it! Its super soft and hold burrows really well! Its also pretty good at odour control and absorbing urine (which with 5 hammies is very important). I’d say it holds burrows better than Fitch, Carefresh, and woodshavings

Good to know, Alpacassei!

May I asked what inspired the switch?

I used Fitch until the quality dropped and I wanted to try out other substrates for natural setups so I then switched to wood shavings but I got tired of finding tiny pieces of wood on all my clothes lol so I decided to try out Kaytee C&C

I really like the idea of different substrates in different areas, it adds variety. The ones I use are hugro hemp & some megazorb mixed in, sand in another area (for my robo maybe not a syrian), and the white C&C in both her houses as it's great for nesting and holding tunnels.

Can't say I'd really suggest a digging tower as they can't exactly burrow in such a confined space, they do need deep bedding in most of the cage. With a linnmon cage it should have plenty of room for 8-12 inches of it in most areas. I sometimes add some hay into deeper bedding areas so tunnels will hold better.
