Cleaning Cage?
Hi everyone,
how often do you need to clean a cage? I have a male syrain hamster ( Coco ) in a small petshop cage. Don't worry, I'm making him a bin cage.
Thanks.
Laura.

Re: Cleaning Cage?
Hi Laura you can leave a cage for 2 weeks if you spot clean the wet areas. I tend to do mine for an older hamster on a weekly basis.

Re: Cleaning Cage?
I was doing Milos weekly, but there was no point, now i leave it for two weeks and just clean out the wee, every other day and his bedding in his house.

Re: Cleaning Cage?
I'm the same - was doing it weekly, but found I was just chucking out clean bedding. I now do as most people - poo pick and wee corner clean every day, check the bedding in his house once a week and then give the cage a full clean every 2 weeks.

Re: Cleaning Cage?
Peggy has a huge cage so each part gets cleaned out every 3 weeks(1/3 every week). But with a syrain i would not recommend more than 2 weeks.
But spot cleaning is definitely worth while, i just clean out the rainbow runner that peggy uses as a toilet and the toys once a week.
I haven't thought about spot cleaning for porridge yet as i only cleaned her cage out for the first time after i got her last friday.
I'll try that from now on, cause its only a one section cage not different compartments like Peggys.

Re: Cleaning Cage?
I do mine every 2 weeks as well, I used to do it every week but it just seemed a waste! Every few days I empty their hammy toilets (the fact they are toilet trained makes it much easier to clean them out as I can just take out the toilets) and give them fresh water etc, and spot wipe anything like Stella's wheel which she wees in grrrr. And every 2 weeks I get everything out and scrub it thoroughly and change the bedding

Re: Cleaning Cage?
I use the special hamster disinfectant to clean it out, and as all three of my hamsters live in my room, they get spot cleaned everyday and properally cleaned out every 5 days.

Re: Cleaning Cage?
I pick out poo and clean out the wee corner every day and check the bedding every few days but I do a proper empty all the sawdust and clean with cage cleaner once a fortnight. Normally on a Saturday if I've managed to get rid of the kids for a couple of hours )
