Default Is a 55 gallon Syrian size?

I bought this 55 gallon tank as an add on to Ruby’s 40 gallon breeder tank. Ruby is a male Syrian I’ve had for 18 months I separated the cages because he made a nest in the tubes that connected them. Got wet tail it was a big ordeal any way I have empty tank syndrome now . Ruby’s older so I believe he’s comfortable in the 40 gallon . Should I try connecting them back now that he’s well or is a 55 gallon large enough for a Syrian baby I’ve had my eye on at my pet store? Thanks for your opinions in advance .

Google is giving me 48"x 13"x 21" (121x33x53cm) dimensions for the 55gal and 36" x 18" x 16" (91x46x40cm) for a 40 gal breeder, is that about right?

Looking at floorspace they're both fairly similar and look to be about equivalent to the 80x50cm cages that a lot of people use. Some people find they work fine for syrians, others don't, it all depends on the ham. Female syrians especially can require more space than that to be happy.

You're the best one to know if Ruby is really happy enough in his tank or if the extra space would benefit him, I don't think anyone can give you better advice on that that you can yourself!

18 months isn't exactly old and often they'll remain active until past 2 years old. The cage size may be ok especially since he's used to it but I personally wouldn't put a new Syrian in just the 55 gallon - a very narrow cage which I don't think is that suitable for a Syrian and there's a good chance they'll want more room. As far as joining them goes, doesn't hurt to try if there's a safe and escape proof way of doing so.

Well the Syrian baby I was interested in got sold. I didn’t think Ruby had much more time on this earth he has slowed down in the last month. I guess I could try connecting the cages again with the kaytee tubes just hope he doesn’t get wet tail again. It wasn’t fun giving baytril twice a day for 10 days! Luckily the vet gave me a discount still $65. Ruby is truly a special ham he doesn’t bite and we have been through a lot . He had an eye infection when I got him. He has an order from twilight chinchillas coming soon just paid it all off.

Ah could be that he’s just less active now. Wet tail is an awful thing to go through but there isn’t going to be that risk at his age now. Maybe a bit of stress but it shouldn’t result in a vet trip. But if it’s kaytee tubes or nothing I’d go with leaving him as it is - those tubes aren’t big enough for a Syrian if it’s the critter trail type ones and would actually be a hazard. An extra tank isn’t going to really add more floorspace it would mainly provide extra enrichment. See it would be nice to set up the 55g as a deep burrowing area which the 40g doesn’t allow for, but only if you have suitably sized tubes - not really sure on any alternatives myself.

I would just leave him in the 40 gallon breeder. It's plenty big enough - a move could stress him which he doesn't need. Joining tanks does lead to issues with tubes so I wouldn't bother

A 40 gallon breeder tank is a really good size for a syrian.

I think the 55 gallon is too narrow. The next size up that would be good from a 40 gallon breeder is a 75 gallon which is 4 foot by 18" deep x 21" high.

Well a 40 gallon breeder is going to be about the very smallest you’d want for a Syrian - I wouldn’t call it a really good size or anything, about Alaska sized but more difficult to set up enrichment wise. And that is going to be suitable for a more laid back one only, so for future reference a 75 gallon or larger is going to be preferable.
