Oh look at that I am immediately livid.

Depending on what year this was and where you are there are appeals processes in place now to stop awful scummy landlords (most of them imo) doing this. They have to prove they actually spend that much fiixing it. Of course some people don't have the time or resources to deal with an appeals process. And that's no good to you now anyway. Ugh. The private rental sector is a hellscape.

I think your plan is solid! Wish you could explain to your wee one the effort you're going to to keep her happy lol

Actually I have one more question before I buy...
Now that I've worked out the issue of hiding a super large cage.
Should I go for the barney or the alexander? I've seen some poor reviews on the alexander saying its flimsy, the barney has way better reviews.

Haha trust me, so bloody annoying! unfortunately my housemates were happy to just roll over and let the agents take the money. thieving bastards. Onwards and upwards hopefully haha! I wish that too - hopefully she'll be happier in a bigger cage and seeing her enjoying herself will be enough for me x

Haha sounds like a plan. I've used both short term (the alexander a while ago) and I think they're about as sturdy as each other, pretty good quality cages. I guess the Barney has a tiny bit extra floor space but I personally prefer the items that come with the Alexander (2 shelves, the long house). I think it's a question of whether or not you think they're worth the extra money, or if you'd rather buy your own accessories to fill the height or potentially get a larger house than what the Barney offers etc.

I can see the dilemma - if you're discreet they probably won't bother. But if you asked permission - with student housing it's tricky - if they said yes to one, they would be worried they'd end up with six hamsters in the house etc and it escalating (some student houses do have 6 students in!).

The Barney is quite big to hide! Personally I would go with throwing a blanket over it. Unless the bars would fit in a wardrobe. But it may look a bit strange.

I came to this conversation a bit late. The Barney is a great cage, but in the circumstances I'd have gone with the Alaska - it's big enough if set up well, and much easier to hide as the bars collapse and fold flat. You could be creative with the set up and ensure your hammy has plenty of out of cage time.

If that does seem like an idea - you could try cancelling the Barney order and get the Alaska instead. I had to do that once and Zooplus were very helpful. They had already shipped the cage, but advised me to just refuse accepting it when it was delivered, so it would be sent straight back to them without additional cost.

The reason I'm saying this is - the Barney is really big! The extra depth (54cm instead of 50cm) doesn't sound much, but that and the flat top make it really quite bulky and it sticks out a long way.

However, if you love the Barney cage and have space to hide the bars then go for it

Hey! I’m currently at ‘home home’ with my parents until Friday, but before I left I took measurements of everything to see if it could fit. The wardrobe is huge so the bars will definitely fit in there when stood on their side, and my bed has large enough under-storage to fit the base in. So hopefully it will work but when it arrives I’ll have to test it and see! Of course if it’s not viable then I’ll have to think of another option, but I think she would really benefit from the extra floor space and also I wanted to prevent having to do another upgrade if I got the Alaska - I know the barney is the largest cage within my budget and space right now and for the foreseeable future, so it will hopefully be her last upgrade until I move out of student accommodation in a year!
I’ll keep the thread updated when it arrives and let you know whether the idea has worked!

Sounds like my house when I was a student luckily my landlords werent bothered as long as we didnt make a mess with substrate etc. I think the hamster room was the cleaning room in the house by far lol

Hi everyone, just a quick update that the barney arrived and she loves it, I’m waiting for some parcels to arrive after the bank holiday to add to the cage but it’s looking good so far and she’s settling nicely. The cage also fits in the hiding spots, hurrah!!!
