Linnmon boards are plenty sturdy! They are cardboard in the middle but the majority of the structural screws go into the chipboard parts. It feels as solid as most IKEA furniture once it's together. I have a few screws in the cardboard part as well to hold perspex and they feel solid enough if you only need them as backup restraint and nothing integral. You won't need them if you're going with glass tho.

If you go for the b&q melamine boards you might have the seal and paint some edges? With the Linnmon all the open edges are on the bottom so you can't see them.

That is so good to know!
I was basing my judgement on the tutorial video but glad to know from someone who has first hand experience

Yes, that is definitely one of the appealing aspects of the linnmon option

I've decided to scrap the dubious chipboards I have already cut and painted. I don't think it's worth the risk.

I'm going to go ahead with building the ikea linnmon diy cage. I'll keep you updated on its progress soon. Hoping to go and pick up supplies this evening

Hi all,

We have built Wonder Mae her Linnmon upgrade.

Last night we visited Ikea to get the Linnmon boards and Hemnes glass - it was quite fun because my partner and I strictly travel by bike so we rigged up a bike trailer

Here I am after wrapping and strapping everything in blankets and bungees
ikea small.jpg

It was really easy to cut and assemble using Vanillaham's trusty youtube tutorial.

The only obvious difference is that Ikea has changed the design of the hemnes glass top since the last time they stocked it.

It now has 3 small holes and brackets that fit into them along one of the longest edges.

This wasn't an issue though. If anything, it added additional support for the glass front.

So here's Wonder's old setup -

And here's her brand new Linnmon for comparison -

after.jpg

Just incase you need more of a comparison -

Now to sort through all of this to set up her mighty palace

Sorry you encountered a few issues along the way of building Wonder’s DIY cage. It can be so stressful as all we want is the best for our hammies but any set backs can be a little disheartening but pleased that Wonder has a lovely Linnmon cage to enjoy. Sure she will enjoy it!

Very impressed with you cycling too and from IKEA with the pieces for your DIY cage - did you have far to travel?

Thanks SKB.
Yes, I'm so glad it finally all came together.

It was a 6 mile round trip. I felt quite useless because the trailer was attached to the back of my boyfriend's bike

And we picked a very windy evening to go - so windy we saw someone's boat chimney fly off into the canal! (We live close to the river lea and IKEA is a pleasent ride all along the canal)
They weren't home, but we managed to pull it out of the water and leave it on their deck.

That’s not too bad my nearest IKEA is a 40 minute drive away.
That’s was kind of you to rescue the canal boat chimney and leave it on their deck for them.

This is looking super nice!! I love how tiny Wonder looks in it, she's going to be a very happy girl!

Also love that you cycled it home. That is dedication. I can almost see IKEA from my house and I still only go when my partner is available to drive me!
