Default 2 levels??

I bought a bin cage for my hamster that I am getting in about a week and I am getting a syrian hamster so I was wondering if it’s could for the hamster if I made a small second level. I’ve read that 2 levels isn’t good for syrian hamster but I just thought I could give her a bit more room. Is a second level bad for a syrian ?

Do you mean like a shelf or platform, as opposed to a full second level? Syrians love having another level/shelf - it gives them something to sit under to feel secure and they also seem to like sitting on a shelf to have a wash (maybe because it's stable so they don't topple over when grooming ). It's also a good place to put any hard items that might sink in the substrate or get tunnelled under - eg ceramic items, a food bowl etc.

I have never read that levels are bad for syrians, only that they shouldn’t be counted as “floor area” when discussing cage sizes. And that they’re bad for pairs of dwarfs.

Like Serendipity I like shelves for stability, I use an Ikea Knagglig box for all my syrians which works as a platform/large nest box underneath. Takes up quite a bit of a bin cage but all the space underneath and on top is useable.

I just finished sticking the leg back on this platform actually, it’s a cheap IKEA shelf with craft dowels stuck on as legs. Previous ham built the bedding up underneath and had a huge nest. The little fence isn’t necessary at all I just had a lot of time on my hands when I made it
