Default bedding for burrowing

hey!!
yesterday i put in a lot more bedding and my hamster has started to burrow! i can see him up against the glass of the detolf digging about which is great to watch, but the roof of the burrow seems to fall down. i can’t tell if it’s falling all the way or just blocking the glass.
i use aspen, but i thought this was a good bedding to use for burrowing? do you know why this is happening?

Sometimes burrows will fall in no matter which substrate you use. If you put layers of hay throughout the aspen it will add more stability when he burrows though.

Other than woodshavings, paper beddings like Carefresh and Kaytee CC are also good for burrowing if you want to try something else

It might be easier for he/she to borrow if the bedding is paper based. Also, you could add hidden hideouts under the bedding so that you hamster can sleep after a lot of borrowing. If you also put some treats like sunflower seeds in the hideouts, they will be very eager to find the houses. Hope this helps

I would mix some Kaytee Clean and Cozy in with the Aspen. I'd suggest getting the white Kaytee CC and make sure it's not a scented one - some are scented.

Mixing two substrates together helps tunnels hold and the paper based ones work well for tunnels and probably better with two substrates mixed.
