Default Cleaning Ikea Detolf???

Ive just purchased the ikea detolf for my hamster until ive made a lid shes still in her bin cage. I watched a youtube video and someone said that with a cage like the ikea detolf you dont need to do a full cleaning every single week as its more spread out and such compared to other cages. Can anyone comment on this if its true or not?

I was thinking it may be true as she usually poos and pees in the one area which i clean daily and the smell wouldnt be as strong as its a huge area!

So how often do i do a cleaning with the detolf?

Unless it's a very small cage, too small, you wouldn't clean weekly anyway!
Other than spot cleaning pee you don't need to clean much at all, the nest area should always be left alone as much as possible unless it gets peed in, maybe clean some of it & replace it but never all once a month or so, same goes for the rest of the cage, you could do a partial clean about once a month, maybe a third with a cage the size of the detolf, scattering some of the old substrate back on top.
If you clean out the place where the hoard is then you can either just put it back or if it has fresh food mixed in then replace it with more hamster food.
Some people say to just clean the top layer but that will depend how much you ham digs & burrows, I find the substrate gets well mixed up with them digging & bit of food & poo tend to end up at the bottom of the cage.

The most important thing is to never clean too much at any one time, never removing too much of your hams scent, cleaning too often is very stressful for them, it is unfortunate that many people are advised to do weekly cleans.
I don't stick to a set time scale really just use common sense! If it doesn't need doing, that is if it isn't smelly or have old food & poo everywhere then leave it be!
Doing just a partial clean once every month & a half would be fine though.
