I want to revamp Diegos cage!
Hey guys!
So at the moment, Diego's cage, while full of enrichment, just isn't really exciting to look at nor probably exciting for him to explore. My plans are to buy some wooden platforms etc. that I can mount on the cage, use wooden bridges, rocks, more sand etc.
The last time I redone his cage, he was in a huff with me for like 2 days 😂 so is my best option to phase these items in slowly, one at a time and over a couple of weeks?
Also! I was thinking about scatter feeding him.. At the moment he has a bowl to eat from but I like the idea of him having to actually find his grub.
Any advice is greatly appreciated! Picture because he's adorable 😊

Re: I want to revamp Diegos cage!
Lovely photo!
Changes to the cage can be very stressful for them even when they are good changes so I would go slowly just changing one thing at a time, give him a while to get used to it & see how it likes it then change something else, not too much at once.
If you're bowl feeding it's best to keep the bowl, put some food in there & scatter some, they do love foraging but if they're used to having a bowl & expect to find food there I wouldn't change all in one go.

Re: I want to revamp Diegos cage!
Beautiful Hammie!
If I wanted to change the 'theme' of my hammies cage, I always used to change one thing out at a time. I'd like to be able to keep their scent in the cage on something throughout the whole process so they still felt comfortable.
I was the same as you when it came to liking the idea of scatter feeding but I was always too worried they wouldn't find it and wouldn't be eating enough. I used to put majority of their portion for the day in the bowl and then scatter the rest around their 'eating area' for them to find.

Re: I want to revamp Diegos cage!
I had the same worry about scatter feeding. I do a mix of pellets and seed mix, though, so I was able to see that my hammie found the pellets in about 2 seconds flat, so I had visual confirmation that he was getting at least some food.
I also weigh him pretty regularly because I'm a nervous first time hamster owner. I have a little digital food scale and during play pen time I'll put a sunflower seed on the scale and he'll crawl up there.

Re: I want to revamp Diegos cage!
Generally, adding new things goes down well. What stresses them is if you take something way ("that's mine!") - surprisingly they seem to get a bit attached to some things or just like to know they're there. And also it stresses them if you move things to a different place or interfere with their house or nest.
So if you can add new things and not move too much it would be better
