As far as I know reptile sand isn't safe to use.
If you're really not happy continuing with the tiny friends farm sand you might do best to use children's play sand.

Thank you cypher. It's difficult to know really. It just got me a bit worried when I saw that video. I'm not sure what the health risk is with the tiny friends sand. It's certainly a grey colour the one I've got, so I don't really know what to think.

I've looked for children's play sand and managed to find a smaller bag of 5kg (everywhere else is 15kg!) Is this one ok?
Play sand.

That would be fine, you'll probably need to bake it in the oven to dry it out before use.

I haven't seen the video so I have no idea what the problem was supposed to be but I haven't had any problems with the new grey sand, it just looks horrible! I didn't even find it to be more dusty than the previous sand but some people seem to find theirs was.

Some people are claiming the sand is made of clay that clumps together when wet and has caused fatal blockages when eaten.

Personally, I didn’t notice anything like that when I used their new sand, it behaved like normal sand. But all these negative reviews are coming from the US so I’m not sure if they have a different product to the one sold here.

With the UK version, the only complaints are that its not as soft anymore, its grey, and dustier.

I found it darker and sort of coarser. Hams weren’t keen so I got the Rodipet one - it is an enormous tub and will probably last me forever! The Tiny Friends one didn’t seem to do any harm though - just shunned a bit by Newt - Nugget didn’t shun it but much prefers the rodipet one. I actually find the Rodipet one slightly dusty when pouring it out but it settles - it’s more like the old supreme/tiny friends one before they changed it.

I am a bit cautious about the desert sand. Anything more moist can get mouldy. But haven’t tried it or seen it.

It sounds like the US version might be different then. Yes the one I've got is coarse and grey, so presumably they have added clay to it for extra absorption? My girls seem to like it and I don't think they try to eat it but I might get that play sand anyway just to eliminate a possible risk. Although, wouldn't sand be just as risky if ingested, wouldn't that clump too? Or is it different to clay when wet?

Glad this has been mentioned on the forum, I happened to see the YouTube video very recently from HammyLux about this cause for concern and did wonder about it....

We've always used this brand, I have noticed that it is a greyer colour slightly and it does seem to be slightly dustier than before. Our hamster only uses her sand bowl as a toilet. We've a tiny bit left of sand, so might throw away if any doubt of safety.

I can't at the moment where I'm living be baking sand in an oven, so will try Rodipet next time. Serendpity did you order the Rodipet sand from Amazon by any chance?

Bright moon it does sound as though it may be a US issue, I've never used play sand but many people have over the years, I doubt they would ingest it too but there doesn't seem to have been a problem with it.

Quicksilver I don't think amazon sell the rodipet sand, rodipet do sell a couple of different brands of sand if you want to buy from them, the Bimsi sand I found to be quite dusty but the WitteMolen is good & comes in two sizes.

When clay clumps, it forms a hard solid lump (think like cat litter). Sand clumps are just held together by moisture and will come apart under pressure or when dried (kinda like when grains of rice stick together).

Ah I see, thanks alpacassei. It does sound like the play sand might be the safest bet then. I'll get some and see how they get on with it.
